Post subject:  Carlton in 1987 - I want your memories...

Have a read of this:

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... 22%2C+1987

I didn't really follow the Blues (or footy for that matter) in 1987 but there were so many great names at Carlton, in a great era of footy, that its pages in the Blueseum deserve nothing less than what 'beauzla' wrote about Round 22, 1987.

So I'd like to start a project in here to remember 1987, starting at Round 1.

In this game at Princes Park, the Hawks kicked 22 goals to win by 45 points. Does anyone remember the game...who played well...who kicked goals....?

Mols....better still; I've got the Video...."1987: a Look Back" which covers every Carlton match of that year....And a vid of the GF itself.

All I or somebody has to do is watch it and make notes or whatever.

At the 'mo unfortunately; I haven't got time.

It was bloody hot an my mates and I jumped into my pool after every goal we scored, then proceeded to hang shit on our Dork mate about how hot he looked :P

It was hot .....DAMN HOT.

I recall getting even hotter as I proceeded to rub it in to every nearby Dork Supporter.

There was a lot of revenge that day - but at 31 degrees celcius it certainly wasn't a dish served cold that day.

New we had it in the bag in the third quarter when one of our players (I will have to check the video) - raced past Rocket Rodney Eade over on the outer wing - gave him 10 metres and passed him in 5 :P ,made him look like he was standing still.

Denis Cometti commentated with this gem in the first quarter:

"Ian Aitken trips the light fantastic"

That, and the emotion of Mots and Dessie are the things that stick in my mind the most.

wrt the grand final, it is the only one I can remember that never had an opening bounce. I think Hawthorn had one too many in the square and Harry had the first kick of the game (?)

usually the highlight of any umpires career would be to take the first bounce in a grand final, that poor sucker missed out.

Jars....to quote from the Book "The Dominator""....

" What happened was that Hawthorn had Schwab to tag me and Tuck to tag Bradley, but what they didn't know was that Wallsy had decided that Craig and I would both play as Centremen.

They wanted Ayres to play in the Centre, and he lined up there, so with him, two taggers and the Ruckman and Rover all in there; they stuffed
up.

With everyones nerves on edge, I was the only one to notice....but I had to bide my time to tell the Umpire, Ian Robinson, because he hadn't yet asked the Captains if they were ready.

I yelled at Rhys to distract Brereton" ........etc.etc.

Jumping ahead there....and to continue

...."The last thing Robinson wanted was someone distracting him in the most important bounce of his career....but I did at the last crucial moment.....they had 5 in the middle; and he threw the ball to me.....soon we were 3 goals up"

So there you go mate....Dom had the first kick.

re: 1987 GF and 5 in the square - read from about half way down. It was apparently the Dominator who pointed it out.

Was in the old southern stand that day - on 2 hours sleep the night before. It was 32 deg (the previous 4 days were in the low 30's) and there were plenty of people with zinc cream on their nose.

Some fond memories

-Dominator kicking first 2 with the fist pump
-The boys taking it one minute at a time
-Braddles goal in the 3rd quarter tapping ball in front of him
-Mark Naley's goal in the last quarter when everyone else stood still
-DR-J, SOS, Deano, Tommy Alvin, Aitken and Kennedy fantastic
-Glazza's job on Platten
-Doing it for Mots and Des English

Got absolutly hammered at the Hippodrome after the game!

BTW, the ABC commentary with Tim Lane was much better than the Broadcom team

mols....are you in Melbourne?....as I said; I've got all of the '87 matches on Video.

All the Dominator said about that first match was that Hawthorn thrashed us playing as they had in the '86 GF; and that we hadn't learned anything from it at that stage.....but we only lost another 3 matches for the season.

I sat on the wing in the upper deck of the old southern stand .I was there in 86 and sat next to a guy who our mutual mate had got tickets for. He was from Scotch College and was a real tosser. Now dont get me wrong as not all kids from good old Scotch are wankers with their heads so up their flower arse they cant see the play. But this guy had a degree in wanking. In 86 we had it lost so to speak but I stayed to the bitter end.

In 87 it was the sweetest revenge because the very same guy and I sat in the same seats. And I kid you not he wore his flower tweed jacket as I cheered every goal in my old wooly Blues jumper that was 4 sizes too small .Unlike this old faithful this pompous cauliflower decided to vacate the premises after sticks slotted that one from 55 m. He is now probably defending hapless turds in the courts as the only thing I new about him was he was a lawyer.

Which reminds me what happens when a lawyer jumps 30000 feet and his parachute doesn't open. Answer

WHO flower CARES

Just thought I would add that one in.
Enough of him as I havent seen him since that hot day. You new it was hot because Tucky changed into short sleeves. I new we were going to win when Dom flattened Dipper and no Dork came in to fly the flag. It was over then.

I kept the video for many years but lost it or taped over it.

A GREAT DAY REVENGE CAN BE SWEET

Post subject:  ROUND 1 1987

as for Round 1 1987, it was basically a carbon copy of the GF from 1986.

Hawthorn pumped us right from the start and we couldn't peg them back. WE had a few moments but nothing spectacular. I left, heart-broken that we hadn't seemed to have learnt anything about them over the summer. IT was a very very disappointing day.
We were 31 points down at half time. Can't really remember much more about it actually. Can't find any records of who played well or whatever but will keep searching
