Post subject:  Reasons to be Cheerful

Theres been an awful lot of negativity surrounding Carlton lately.

Much of this has unfortunately been with good reason.

But there is an optimistic way to look at our current plight.

The fact is, Carlton will come good.

Between now and that happy event - we can measure this interval in time or maybe in terms of home and away matches.

Actually, if the right players are selected, Carlton might return to footballing respectability in as little as 50 home and away matches time (plus a couple of pre season of course)

Viewed in this way, it does put the current problems into perspective.

Rest assured Pagan will either come good or he will be sacked, there is no middle ground any more. He would be well aware of this.

As for the board, their fate pretty much rests with our on field performances in 2007 or quite possibly earlier - maybe December 2006.

Because we are a club that has a collective consciouness that is founded in success, Many of the administrative and coaching issues will be worked out.

There are enough Carlton people hovering around our current malaise to ensure that this will happen, It is just a matter of when it will occur.

This will probably be sooner, rather than later.

Thanks for the post Blueman, you have summed up pretty well how I feel.
Its hard to be positive with all the crap that is happening at the moment.
But I think that with the good young players we have plus this years draft picks bodes well for 2008 and beyond. I still think we will struggle in 2007 as we still have some glaring weaknesses in the team. Hopefully they will be addressed in this years draft.

2008 onwards are going to be very exciting, by that stage we should have at least 5 or 6 up and coming champions in the team.

Yes it is - I think it was taken in Adelaide  Although, I don't think the SAs believe in foreplay.

The Swans had to wait 72 years to come good.

Melbourne have won 13 flags, but haven't come good since 1964.

St Kilda have been waiting for 40.

Geelong 43.

How long do we have to tread water before coming good?

I think Stkilda have made us look feeble and weak......they kept the blood on their hands to a minimum and were far more organised in the execution of Thomas...we had Pagans head on the block but missed the target.
Its just further embarrassment being shown up by the Saints....

This very much depends on what your criteria for 'good' is. Carlton as a club have committed to development based on a youth policy (this is in as far as we can believe our board). Pagan however may see his survival contingent on wins. The two are not necessarily the same eg we could have a Clayton's year as in 2004; the coach will go after more last chance charlies like Gardiner; etc.

Development for me is developing a sound, modern and flexible game strategy - importantly one the team can believe in. It means better game day tactics and team structures. It means modern approaches to fitness and injury management. It means a stable group of innovative assistants who have faith in the coach with the coach returning such faith (by listening to them).

Our youth policy should be based on a horses-for-courses basis - ie not wild race to promote players merely because they are young but on the actuality that players develop at different rates, have different needs and are promoted on form. However, once promoted, they should be part of the team and its on-field rotations - not mere spectators.

This needs a development coach who is given time. Pagan has had 4 years without any perceivable team development results. Now he seems little more than a lame duck coach who no longer has the benefits of time and who lacks support across the club. His focus then, naturally, will be on his own neck.

The club needs to outline what 'good' is. What criteria must Pagan be beholding to.

IMO we have missed a window of opportunity (actually we slammed it shut on ourselves) to re-define where we are heading. With the new picks etc we should be now promoting a brave new Carlton not wallowing in the uncertainty of being neither arse nor elbow.

Be assured that Carlton will come good a lot sooner than camelboy is suggesting.

Remember that unlike other clubs that have prolonged periods in the football wilderness, Carlton does have a vibrant culture of success which still sits not too far in the past.

It is also supported by a multitude of players, both current and passed, all of whom collectively eminate a strong positive aura of success and achievement.

When a new team is bathed in these positive energies

by way of the exhortations of a new coach,

or the actions of knowing assistants, who would have already made the premiership journey

or simply by the rich spiritual tapestry of Carlton's past, which indeed still lives and breathes, even though it is not visible to most

from these things, very positive football outcomes are assured.

These things are only waiting for the correct circumstances in order to be powerfully focussed and then used in a dramatic way to improve the fortunes of our club.

Many of these players indeed do have the necessary life skills and football abilities to bring to the club that will indeed translate into significantly improved performances if a young committed group of players are prepared to learn from them.

After the recent events surrounding our board and our coach, the tolerance of many Carlton people of a continuation of what they saw as, well lets say, poor administration, is very very low.

In addition, Denis knows that this is his last chance to get the current list to improve, the board too in many ways are on notice.

These circumstances have all the makings of a future catalytic flashpoint, from which the new Carlton will come into being.

It is only a matter of time, and a short time at that.
