LITTLE EMPERORS
(dedicated the the Carlton Board)
Under the Roman Toga
the grandeur copped a kicking
when Hannibal drove those elephants
across the Alps
and the elephants in a state of excitement
sent a shiver of despair
through the Roman ranks
when the reality of their marvel
shrunk the Roman’s
belief in themselves.
Then the Vikings ran naked
into the battle, their freedom
ringing liberty’s bell
as flaccid flesh bobbed
up and down the bloodied dell.
The dark ages were really
the confined ages -
everything tucked away in darkness
and whipped only to chants
sung with little boy voices.
The light a memory
of those days when the jewels
were free and unencumbered
with stoic choices.
The 60’s brought a rebirth
as nudely people sang
and danced or slid in mud
and rolled the hay
but even then
the memory of Hannibal’s elephants
undermined the search
for the holiest grail.
We are all small
when compared to that
endowed Beast – I mean
look how big its nose Is!
