If nothing else serves to re-inforce the views of us conspiry theorists about one of the reasons why Carlton is on the financial scrapheap, then the proposal to increase the size of the new rectangular stadium mooted for the Olympic Park Precinct beyond 25,000 is one of them. When the Dockland Stadium was first mooted in the mid 90s, Carlton had already started the extension of Princes Park and had proposed to increase the capacity to 45,000. However this proposal was shot down by the MCC and the conflicted interests of AFL Commissioner Graeme Samuel - who organised to move the Dockland Stadium from the Olympic Park to Docklands. Carltons $8 million investment was destined to screw us from that point on and the AFL Commission, Government did everything they could to achieve that, with motive more for destroying John Elliott than stuffing Carlton - but hey lets not worry about stuffing up the enjoyment of 30000 members and 600,000 supporters around Australia if we can get John Elliott. The proposal to build a 25,000 seat rectangular stadium to house Soccer and Rugby - but already shown to be obsolete for soccer before it is built, is a clear waste of Government money. The clause in Docklands Stadium contract which guarantees no sports stadium with a capacity of greater than 20,000 will be built in Melbourne for 10 years - means that instead of spending $190 million dollars to build a rectangular sports stadium the government could spend a fraction of that say around $10 to 20 million - to renovate and extend Princes Park which could be used as a boutique 30,000 stadium suitable for soccer/rugby/second tier football and fantastic training elite training facility. http://www.theage.com.au/news/soccer/vi ... 08502.html Yep - their goes crazy Agro again and his paranoid theories - but at the end of the day, if Carlton were able to extend Princes Park in the way they had planned in a 45,000 seat capacity stadium with the Legends Stand being built on a higher stadium angle instead of the way it was - then we wouldn't be in half the shit we are now. If the Government go ahead and build this 25,000 seat stadium which is going to be obsolete for soccer before its even finished then thats even more crazy. Princes Park awaits to house Rugby/Soccer and at most at 15% of the planned cost. |

Argo, if memory serves me correct, the biggest problem was the residents close to the ground opposing everything from the underneath car park, size of the stands, the light towers and then Jacks mate in Jeff Kennett got kicked out by the tax man Bracks. But Jack wanted to prove he could do anything he wanted without looking down the road and build it, charge an arm and a leg to sit it in when nobody from other clubs even wanted to go to OO. But hey, I still like your theory ![]() |

Imagine if "they" had poured as much money into Princess Park as they have into the Slippodome. |
