Interesting article in the Age today: http://www.theage.com.au/realfooty/news ... 68016.html "The poll, of 27,000 people across Australia in 2004, found Melbourne supporters were more likely to own their own houses, while Collingwood and Richmond fans remain famously passionate. Carlton and Essendon* fans were found to favour tough physical activity. Geelong supporters attend church more regularly, with Saints fans favouring salary sacrifice for charities. Among the more peculiar findings, here's how some teams fared: CARLTON: Fans were found to be 42 per cent more likely to have been to a casino in the past three months and 20 per cent more likely to like tough physical activity." Whats the old saying about lies, damn lies and statisictics ? |

The Age is playing funny buggers today. The remainder of this article can be found on page 54. :Collingwood supporters 87% more likely to have served a prison term. :Richmond supporters 92% more likely to have embraced the Shane McGowan Dental Hygiene philosophies. :Essendon* [male] supporters 94% more likely to suffer with tendonitis of the wrist as a direct result of excessive wanking. :Melbourne supporters 89% more likely to have recently purchased a band wagon. Thanks for the link JacksBoy, I wonder hoy Morgan defines the term "supporter". Amazing that in the time that our alleged supporter base has dropped by almost 12% Brisbane's has risen by a staggering 87%. |

Yeah - how many of those supporters are nothing but bandwagoners? Or idiots who don't know teams apart from the local one? ![]() |

The full details are fascinating Jacksboy. If you look at the change in supporters 2001 - 2004 Carlton Blues -11.9 Collingwood Magpies 12.8 Essendon* Bombers -6.1 Richmond Tigers -7.8 Kangaroos -20.1 Of the big 4 Traditional clubs only Collingwood is up. Is this due to success - 2 Grand Final appearances or Chairman Eddie. Carlton, Essendon* and Richmond are all down by a reasonably similar magnitude. (Carlton's is larger but with the problems over the last few years that is understandable.) By comparison , the Kangaroos are getting killed. What does this all mean. My reading of this is : 1. We possibly lost 5 % of ours members due to the Big Jack, Salary Cap penalties, and associated problems. (ie, we should have lost 6-7% like Richmond and Essendon* but lost more.) 2. The Victorian clubs are falling behind the non-Victorian clubs in terms of supporter base which leads to more sponsorship and eventually leads to better on field performance due to better facilities and training 3. Some of the other Victorian clubs are able to convert supporters to members at a rate of 1 in 10. We are converting are a rate of 1 in 18. Theoretically, we should be able to have 50,000 members if we can convert at the rate of 1 in 10. |
