Rather than appointing Mitchell senior coach on his own perhaps a structure of co-coaches may be a better model for us if Pagan has to be 'boned'.
At least three persons would share the role but four or even five might be best to provide flexibility and spread of skills.
A co-coach role would provide the opportunity to take a senior coaching role without the burden and responsibility of the strategic direction of the whole football department.
Co-coaches would share the coaching duties and be responsible for player development etc but not control things like recruiting & list management, appointment of specialists and other training staff.
These duties will fall to a new role of 'Director of Football Performance' who would also oversee the performance of the co-coaches and be the link back to the board about their individual performances.
This person should be a widely experienced football club administrator. Someone like Kinnear Beatson for example.
There would not be assistant coaches under this model - jut the co-coaches & then specialists etc.

A co-coaches model gives the board the insurance and flexibility that if one or more of these coaches is not performing to expectations they can be replaced without major disruption to the on-going rebuilding strategy of the club. Standout candidates that may become available from outside the club can similarly be attracted by roles as co-coaches. Being a co-coach at Carlton should be seen as a higher ranked role than a standard assistant coach role and therefore higher credentialed candidates may be interested.

Not a fan of the old congo line of Blues potential coaches...I dont see SOS or Ratten as real standouts and what if anything new they can bring to the club?....and once again its another " Sticks" connection which I am not in favour of....maybe in years to come but we need something new to spark the club not just a honeymoon of hype and old memories...

Voss will be the next Brisbane coach..its a good idea and worth asking but two years in the media and then straight into coaching the Lions is how I see Voss planning his future...

I would like two new assistants with no connection to the club....my preference would be to see the senior role advertised and a proper interview process followed however I understand the money position and how Mitchell is willing to accomodate the club regarding his salary and he also has runs on the board with regard to coaching the younger players and them having confidence in him...

Agreed Elwood. I'd be a bit wary of a cavalcade of ex-Blues champions. It might work, but history suggests too many ex-players is not always a good thing.

I'd cop it if Percy Jones was added to that list. It would give it a bit more merit.

I wonder who would want to be assistant under Mitchell other than his old Carlton buddies?
If we go for a 'rookie' coach like him he should at least have the best assistants available.
Anyone who is any good would be seen as a threat to him from the word go.

Co-Coaches model provides a better chance to secure cream of the crop.
If say a Voss wants to move on to an outright senior spot in a few years like at the Lions then no drama - bring in the next standout to replace him.
Nothing wrong with some turnover in the co-coaches group to keep things fresh current.

To avoid the old Blues issue a mix of say Mitchell/Voss/Carey/Paul Hudson might have merit.

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of Mitchell being coach - for what it's worth, Paul Roos (an ex Swan-Lion) has Ross Lyon, ex team mates as an assistant to him at Swans and the Swans players would do anything for Paul cause they respect him.

Could this be the case with Barry, and will the results the Swans have had, replicate at Carlton? I guess there's a few ways to look at it.

The other advantage to have ex-legends of the club as assistants is the teaching of culture & discipline from within the playing group. These players had this during their time. Not saying I agree with the approach of explayers as coaches and assistants, but it's a different perspective!!!!
