Post subject:  Oh, Captain...

Our leadership group were embarrassing today... Sure, a loss was always going to happen, but players putting their hands up for Kouta's gig next year were the first to let us down.

Whilst watching this debacle unflod, I was thinking who is really there to lead this group for the next few years?

Lance anmd Fev make me very nervous as possible captains, as I think they both have a habit of going to ground when the going gets tough. I also suspect that they are putting their hands up for their own self glory rather than leading this team - but then, praps that's just me...

I started looking at senior players like Scotland and French as possibilities. (Then, French goes and retires on me...!!) Scotland quietly goes about his business in the toughest part of the ground and has been great this year.

Thornton has developed into a strong leader in the back half, but like the rest of the team, needs assistance.

Do we bite the bullet and go young? Murphy and Simmo have something special about them and, at least, be around for a while...

Geez, do we refuse Kouta's exit from the role?

Your thoughts? Who do we give it to?

I think captaincy aspirants should write in 25 words or less why they should be made captain.

lmao.

after today's performance, i'm convinced fev isnt the right man for the job your captain cant get dragged every 2nd week and mouth off at the umpire after every time he cant mark the ball, he is a champion player and doesnt need the captaincy burden.

i would like to see lance and murph get the co-captaincy and im usually realy against the idea of co-captaincy but we havent got a standout captain and we could raise murphy like wc raised ben cousins and then take it off whitnall when murphy is ready to do it himself, the guy has captain stamped all over him.

Yes,bite the bullet,no Whitnall,he will stuggle in years time, the older you get,the harder to control your weight while Fevola is to hot headed.
Thornton,Scotland and Stevens for Captain or even Andrew Walker who is going somehere.

I reckon Bret Thornton,he has had the hardest introduction to football in over 30 years, maybe more,he does spit the dummy, but he still goes in each season trying his guts out while others in the backline over the years,Livingston,Teague and the others have gave up.

Exactly, the most overated player in Carlton History,i like him when he was like 17 up to about 2001 and done some O.K stuff last year and this year, but i still think he stuggle alot, half way through a season.

I think Andrew Walker has been a stand-out this year in terms of showing dedication above and beyond. He, Simmo and Murph will be the Judd, Cousins and Kerr of our next generation and I think the captaincy should go to one of them, but not in the next year or two.

I don't think we'll be lacking leadership in 3 years time with that trio at the club.

Agree 100% Thorton for captain as far as I am concerned, but I bet the club will not have the balls to do it as it would rock both Lance's and Fevs apple cart

I wouldn't read too much into Lance's game today, he was clearly hurt after that horrible looking landing on his ankle in the first quarter.

Amazed Pagan didn't just bring him off.

Let's not burden one of the younger players with the captaincy just yet.

Whitnall
Fevola
Stevens
Scotland
Kouta

The captain should come from that lot. Some will set a good example on frield, some off field. None of them really deserve it, but one of them will get the job.

I reckon the best option is for Kouta to captain again, he has been playing well enough lately and was one of our best against Sydney.

And then, after next year, make a youngster captain.

Maybe someone has done this already but comparing the three candidates on what they have actually ACHIEVED in the last 5 years - one has to choose between FEVOLA or STEVENS

Whitnall CANNOT be considered. He is too slow and is too often lost out there.

eg

FEVOLA

1) Coleman medal 2006
2) Tuck medal 2005
3) all australian 2006? (presume)
4) top 3 best and fairest 2006 (presume this is the case)
5) leading club goal kicker 4 times
6) third b and f 2003
7) pre season premiership 2005

STEVENS

1) 2nd B and f 2004
2) 2nd b and f 2005
3) ports 3rd b and f 2001
4) michael tuck medal 2002
5) pre-season premierships with port 2001-02
6) carlton pre-season premiership 2005

WHITNALL

1) 3rd B and F 2005
2) pre-season premier 2005

Or co-captaincy between Fev and Stevens.

Vice-Captain - skinny lappin for all the years of good service.

i said before that lance/murph should be co-captains but now i think the club should have balls and force kouta to captain next year with murphy, im not sure if this is true but it is quite possible the club told kouta to step down from the captaincy because he was doing such a bad job early in the year and that was when he announced he wouldnt captain on, my point being that kouta might still want to captain the club but was told not to. just a thought.

Whitnall doesn't deserve the criticism he is getting, there is so much negativity on these forums. It was obvious that he hurt his ankle on saturday, he can't be criticised for that...he has been with the club for many years, is currently vice captain, and deserves the job, I say: Whitnall for captain, and the great Fev for vice captain.

Blueyonder,

Can you have a look at my previous thread and indicate to me what Whitnall has actually achieved in the last 5 years?

If he is so good - why did Fev win the Michael Tuck medal and not him?
Why hasn't Whitnall finished consistently in top 3 in b and f..?

Ratten was made captain all those years ago because he had the runs on the board - multiple placings in the best and fairest /etc.

Kouta was made captain cause he also had runs on the board - AFL MVP, multipe b and f/ top 3 in grand final of 95 etc.

Bradley - similar as above.

Whitnall has no runs on the board and would be a good pick up for another club that could utilise his reading of play and understanding of the game.

I thank Whits for his efforts... but right now we can't be sentimental.

top 15 pick please.
