IIRC St Kilda's old song was "I do like to be beside the seaside".

Nearly correct Jarusa.

In fact it was, "We do like to be the side that's de-nied".

Have changed my mind, and decided to add a poll.

Or in other words, a poll is UP and running. :-D

Yep i'm with you Bluedog.

Just got of the phone to my older brother and he said it was published as 'up' in an old fan magazine that we used to have kicking around and that's where I got it from.

I voted for "up" but "us" fits better ... I sing "us" ..

Oh man you guys have me so confused Image

I know I've been singing US for the last few years because that is how it is currently written. BUT I admit it doesn't feel right to me.
Reading this thread got me thinking as to why it doesn't feel right and I think my dad and Grandpa taught me the UP version. Unfortuately I can't ask them as they are deceased.
I am basing this on a memory of a book he gave me (early 80's). I no longer have it but maybe someone else remembers it?? It was a CFC kids book about a dad taking his kid to the footy (including the Bluebirds and all Image ) and the back page had the song.
Can anyone confirm the version in this book?

I've just looked up the Official AFL version.....it reads...

We are the Navy Blues

We are the old dark Navy Blues

We're the team who never let's you down

We're the only team old Carlton knows

With all the Champions they like to send us

We'll keep our end up

And they will know that they've been playing

Against the Famous Old Dark Blues.

Oh oh, I know this book! *don't have it though sadly*

There was one for every team, I used to teach classmates to read using these books - and I specifically remember the Carlton one with the champions of that day (mid 80s??) - and the Bluebirds, and how much the dad loves them.

Sorry, although I remember that the club song was on the last page or the back page, I don't have the book... would love to get my hands on it though for my little brother.

If that's the 'official' AFL version, then it must be wrong.

Point to note,

* the team who never let's you down

should read:

* the team that never lets you down

this is what's wrong with the club. It's stuck in the past playing 100+ year old songs. We're a joke.

We've been left behind - look at Freo and West Coast and geez Adelaide. You don't hear those clubs playing 100 year old songs. They've moved on.
We need to learn from them not keep our heads in the sand and suffer the consequences.
Until Smorgon and his rabble can see the way forward we'll be smashed because of this. It futility to keep on doing the same old thing. Might've worked in the late m60s, 70s and 80s but not anymore.

Its an anachronism that must go. No kid is going to hum a 100 yr old tune. Tell me a kid who wants that on their mp3?

We could get Kanye or Fiddy to do something and move with the times. Until this club gets it right we will not improve. The whole place needs a clean out and start again.
The only blokes that know the words are Whitnall and Stevens. Says something doesn't it?

fair dinkum...

you are kidding right??

OK - you could look at the team as a non-entity, which means "that" would be correct .. but as the team is a collection of people, then "who" fits. And as the song is sung by people, then it should be "who".

While "who" may be the more widely used relative pronoun when it comes to groups of people, "that" is also acceptable.

With regard to the use of "that" or "who" in the song, I was not arguing a point of grammar. My point was that the word "that", has, I would have thought, been the more widely accepted/used word in our song.

As for "let's" vs "lets", well ...

FWIW I found the book!

It has:

We are the Navy Blues,
We are the old dark Navy Blues.
We're the team that never let's you down,
We're the only team old Carlton knows.
With all the Champions they like to send up ,
We'll keep our end up,
And they will know that they've been playing,
Against the Famous old dark blues.

So that is the version I learnt as a kid and will stick with. If I figure out how I'll try posting images of the book in the other thread.

For all you club song officianados Tony De Bolfo has written a great article about a version of our song which was recorded 40 years ago in 1967 (which has been mentioned earlier in this thread).

Post subject:  Re: CFC Club Song

Is there any other team in the comp apart from us, that, after a victory, sings different words to those that are sung in the recorded song played over the ground before and after the match?

ie 'us' instead of 'up'

In effect, either the recorded song or the one sang by the team is wrong.

Some teams, like North Melbourne for example, may sing additional words (North Melbourne, North Melbourne...), but I'm referring to the official/main song itself.
