We're a joke, alright, but the song is the least of it. At least we're all (or most of us) are looking foward to singing it a little more often in the coming year ...

But look at

We're the Eagles, the West Coast Eagles,
We're the Eagles, we'll tell you why
We're the Eagles, the West Coast Eagles,
We're the Eagles, we're flying high .....

and the stupid Power song and the stupid Bulldogs song and the stupid North song and the stupid Scum song and the stupid Filth song and the stupid Richmond song .. there are no good AFL team songs (although I'll give props to the Brisbane song) but ours is far from the worst!!

I actually enjoy Freo's song... its upbeat and celebratory.. unlike our droning on song in which people only seem to remember the first five seconds.
Special mention for Richmond's anthem as well.

Will write to the Club this week asking for their take on the correct words ie "UP" or "US". But will not necessarily accept it if they say that "us" is the official version.

As for what AFL songs are good - doesn't really matter - ours is the best.

We've been left behind - look at Freo and West Coast and geez Adelaide. You don't hear those clubs playing 100 year old songs. They've moved on.
We need to learn from them not keep our heads in the sand and suffer the consequences.
Until Smorgon and his rabble can see the way forward we'll be smashed because of this. It futility to keep on doing the same old thing. Might've worked in the late m60s, 70s and 80s but not anymore.

Its an anachronism that must go. No kid is going to hum a 100 yr old tune. Tell me a kid who wants that on their mp3?

We could get Kanye or Fiddy to do something and move with the times. Until this club gets it right we will not improve. The whole place needs a clean out and start again.
The only blokes that know the words are Whitnall and Stevens. Says something doesn't it?

fair dinkum...

Maybe we get Metallica and use their one song and someone edit the lyrics better then i did,lol

I cant remember anything
Cant tell if this was true or a dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stopping me

Now that those draft picks is through with me
Im waking up,now I can see
That there is much left to be
Nothing is real but Premierships now

Hold my breath as I wish for it
Oh please god,don't wake me

Back in the club its much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can look forward to reveal
Look to the time when Ill live

Fed through some garbage that sticks in me
Just like that old board novelty
Tied to sanctions that make me be
Cutting the life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for it
Oh please god,don't wake me
Now the crap is gone I'm just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for it
Oh please god,don't wake me

Darkness was imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot win
Trapped in myself
club my holding cell

Demetriou had taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell no more flower.

Just heard back from Stephen Williamson and this is the info I got:

The one that I'm most happy with is that it was written by Agnes Wright and her cousin Irene McEldrew (Agnes mother was Dan's Minogue sister Dorrie, so her uncle was Dan Minogue) the then coach of Carlton (1929-1934) and was written around 1929 to 1931 when Lily of Laguna was again a popular song in Australia. Agnes lived in Middle Park/Albert Park and have several Carlton players boarding with them like Soapy Vallence and Eric Huxtable etc. One day after training/or a good win these Carlton players "demoaned the fact that Carlton didn't have a theme song". So Agnes and Irene composed the Old Dark Navy Blues (with these players?). Another claim is it was written by Jeffrey and Anne Hales (but I have doults about this).

The football Record in 2004 went with the Dan Minogue's link.

The first list I had was from a 1960's (pre 1968) Chip company mini wall chart with a caricature of Ron Barassi and list of senior premierships and runners up and the theme song and it had "They like to send us."

Before the 2003 (?) season they had an open day at Optus Oval, Princes Park and they had sheets with Carlton theme song words and again it was "With all the champions they like to send us"

-----------

So looks like 'us' might be in with a show again.

Like I said before I have a 60's record that says 'up' so it looks like this question may have been around for decades.

No relation to Kylie Minogue i hope, lol :)

Mishgee would be the only non Freo person to like their song, truly.

I can't talk, while I hate Port and everything they stand for I actually like the words (not tune) of their song - second verse is great in that it mentions their history and has some nice emotive words/phrases

With our tradition so strong
We can't go wrong
We're the Alberton crowd
Port Adelaide proud
And the heroes are those
Who've earned the right
To wear the silver - teal
And black and white
And the Port supporters
Standing tall
True believers
One and all

The only club song in the AFL that you can -

'da dada da da ho hum'

- to... that way you don't even have to sing the words to piss off opposition supporters...

As for Richmond - I'd love to dump a truckload of chickenshit on their club song...

OK back to topic... I was always told it was send up as in take the piss, because our stars at the time were often objects of public satire in the papers of the time e.g. "The Argus" etc...

So Carlton was the team "With all the Champions they like to send up"

What club in their right mind would praise the players of other teams as champions?

BTW I have a soft spot for the Melbourne song... I don't know why, I just like it...

Let's hope that 'painting various areas' will include painting a 'P' (as in 'up')where there is currently an 'S' (in 'us') on the Club song board in the change rooms.
