http://carltonfc.com.au/default.asp?pg= ... eid=194290 5:56:39 PM Tue 5 April, 2005 Scott Spits Sportal for afl.com.au Quote: Irishman Setanta O'hAilpin is unlikely to be considered for senior selection in the short term because Carlton coach Denis Pagan believes the rookie-listed player may benefit more from regular match experience in the VFL...

Makes more sense than playing 20 minutes off the bench in the seniors. |

"...The issue we've got with Setanta is he comes up and plays a game on the bench..." Just like Simmo. Simmo doesn't need to learn the game like Setanta, but sitting on the bench sure doesn't help his game. The downside of added depth at the club is that we have to be more patient with the up-and-coming players. Patience??? What the hell is that? |

It's a fine line really, because Setanta, and the other guys in the Bullies, need a run in the ones to give them a taste I reckon. Obviously for guys on the rookie list this needs a bit more planning, and sadly misfortune in the form of an LTI, but I guess at the end of the day I trust Denis. Even though I'd love nothing more than the big Irish gazelle to get a gig in the seniors! |

This is how I see it. If by Round 16 or 17 it doesn't look like we will be playing finals and we have a long term injury to one of our players (god forbid), then I reckon we might see Setanta run out in the Navy Blue. But remember, after this year he has done his two years on the rookie list, so he will be elevated no matter what. That would leave two new rookies to come in to replace Setanta and Plemmo. |

Pagan is still saying that setanta will be staying with the bullants for the year http://www.eveningecho.ie/pdf/back.pdf |

Beach towels are cheap at Michael Guineys. I think it is best for setanta to get lots of game time with the bullants doing lots of different things. Unless he starred straight away at senior level he would be reduced to quite a bit of bench time which may slow his development. I have no doubt he will be promoted to the senior list at the end of the season (if not sooner). Patience young Jedi, it will come. |

The club are looking longterm for the O'hAilpin brothers. Setanta and Aisake will be awesome for us in the futurel. Let them get plenty of practical experience before unleasing them. I see Setanta in particular as being a cornerstone in our next Premiership team. |

I am not sure he is saying Setanta WILL be playing for the bullants for the year, just that he is content to play him in the bullants for the year. Just saying that Setanta is exactly where he needs to be and his time will come. And as Jarusa says, if he starts to dominate at VFL level he will be brought in without much hesitation. Jarrad Waite played an entire season in the VFL in 2002 (or was it 03?), even though things were going terribly in the seniors and every man and his dog was getting a game. I think most people would agree it was probably the best thing for him - to allow him to fully develop at a lower level. Next year will be the year of the Fijirishman - without a doubt! |

I think there is no rush on the kid, he has 3/4s of a season to make an impression, and I think he will, (well, really hope so at least) |

Can say with conviction the Carlos needs a lot more time with the 'Ants. While he kicked 2 against Sandringham, he seems to panic with his kicking on the run and can't snap to save himself. Reckon we'll see Bryan debut before Setanta... Hello old friends. |

PM me if u need the phone number again. nah, Sherriff. i've retired from VFL reporting and the club has found some keen young journo student to cover the boys. his stuff is good and he is keen to develop his writing style. whoever you are if you're on here - please introduce yourself. we've gone to player interviews this year - y;know milestone games, injured players, stuff like that. the club is keen on pagan interviews too, so we'll see how we go. |
