How many fullbacks have made it as a coach?
A lot of defenders such as Parkin, Pagan, Malthouse, Sheedy, Worsfold, Roos, Grant Thomas
, etc. have made been terrific coaches or great ones, but I can't think of a full back who has made it.

This is pretty interesting. How many people would like to see SOS in charge of the Navy Blue? The article also says that Robert Walls endorsed SOS as the next Blues coach in one of his Age columns in April. I'm not really sold on SOS. Great player: yes. Great communicator: no. On television at least. Would he be up to it? It's hard to tell. I'd prefer to see him do an apprenticeship with either the VFL or as an assistant coach before taking the reigns. I think that the way that the Tigers were burnt by the Danny Frawley experiment serves as a case study for taking on untested former 'champions' in the head coach role. So, ahem, my answer = no. |

I'm not sold on him either, but I am only going by his special comments work when he was on TV and the odd interview etc. I didnt find him a great communicator or a new ideas man... I think the club will go back to ex Carlton players when Pagan and crew exit and I think its a mistake..... My view on SOS is that he makes a good skills coach and works well with individual player ie Roberts Thompson but hasnt been in the system long enough to be considered for senior coaching roles... |

Agreed. He's one of the poorest special comments guys in the media at the moment. That being said, he may turn into a terrific senior coach. But the exposed form suggests he won't. Having said that, he looks to have done a terrific 'specialised coaching' job with Lewis Roberts-Thompson. |

SOS for coach. He isn’t the greatest special comments coach on television but either is Eade. The young ones will respect him because he is arguably the best player that ever played for Carlton. Back or forward he led and made the mediocre players around him look like superstars. He knows the game batter than a lot of people and with the right MC around him he could be very successful. |

The next coach of Carlton should go through an exhaustive interview process with some club people and some independants conducting interviews. The club clearly needs to define what are the key requirements for the man to take on the job and then find a person who best fits that criteria. Posters putting up names is all good and well but I recall West Coast offering the senior job to Neil Craig which he eventually knocked back. At the time I said Neil who? Now we all know Neil Craig. |

You're not going to find too many like Neil Craig, and it's not like he wasn't already familiar with the Adelaide list... What would be a simpler solution is to find a reasonably innovative coach and hire a sports scientist as an assistant coach. Simple. I think if we drop off Libba and Eshlaugh (sp?) and grab SOS and said sports scientist that would go pretty well. Unless of course it's like that movie Wedlock (or Deadlock depending where you saw it) and Denis and Trout each have a collar wired to explode should they stray too far from one another. |

That makes heaps of sense Woof!!! do you reckon the club would understand it though??? After all you are talking about a being professional approach to appointing a coach..professionalism is a concept which is foreign at the carlton footy club |

Akermanis hasn't coached at the highest level before. As an assistant or head coach. I'd essentially like someone with runs on the board. Someone who has proven they can coach and can coach well. |
