Malthouse - arrogant and prickly and domineering. Hard to like at just about any level.

Matthews - dirty, nasty player. Grumpy, prickly hard bastard as a coach.

Worsfold - dirty, nasty player. Uncompromising personality.

Clarkson - sniper. Angry man, borderline psychopath.

While we've been in the wilderness since 1995, these people have been winning flags. They haven't been winning hearts. They're uncompromising bastards, and I suspect not all that likeable while they're on the job.

Personally I couldn't give a shit how warm and fuzzy our senior coach is. I just want him to lead this club to a Premiership. And I suspect that there's a fair negative correlation between Nice and Successful in this game.

And this may be naive and simplistic, but if I was a player who chose when to go and thought he could skate through his whole career without getting his hair mussed up, I'd be a lot more comfortable fronting up to a coach like Ratten than I would anyone in the group above.

Who was that guy who coached our last flag again? You forgot to mention his name.

When Parko was coaching and that vein would pop out you knew he was MAD!

Yeah, early Parko (by his own admission) was crazy. Vein-popping levels of intensity. He'd mellowed a bit in his later years, but for most of his career he was a bit mad, as I think you probably need to be to excel at that job.

Walls was a complete hardarse too.

And so was Barassi. Half his players hated him.

The coach isn't there to be everyone's friend. That rarely translates to onfield success unless you're playing in a pub league. Even then ...

Yeah, but they listened.

They all won flags.

Sorry Mr Nice Guy Brett, you've got to go, we love you for what you have given to this club, but we need something more.

And the other half thought he was a real Mike Hunt, you know who I mean, the World Championship Wrestling referee who used to be on Channel 9 in the early 70s.

And Jezza drove his team into the ground with his simple mantra of ''KISS''....keep it simple, stupid.

And in 1979...........we won the Flag under him.....hard work and KISS worked.

Gat summary JohnM, this group is a yo yo mentally. I think an uncompromising hard arse is exactly what they need.

Roos would be my preference if the field was open, but MM's record speaks for itself. Make it happen

Well said guys.

Our boys played like spoilt mummies boys against GC.
Embarassing.

They need a disciplinarian. Simple.

Add a bit of depth from trades and draft - delistments and also injured players return.
Lots of potential coaches would love that.

But yeah, I'm into forcing a tough task master on this group: Judd can't, or just doesn't.
Worked for me.

HTFU...for real this time.

I want a flower FLAG!!!!! NOW!!!!!

I recall in his last year he had his successor Brittain delivering the talks at the end of the breaks as well.

Agreed good post JohnM.

People need to forget about having a coach that is well liked by the media, and media savvy and all that rubbish. Number 1 factor should be having a coach that is respected by his players and who will get the best out of them.

Now I'm definitely not saying rattan isn't liked or respected. But is he getting the best out of his players?? I'd be leaning towards no.

All of the collingwood players coached by MM still absolutely sing his praises. Not a bad word said about him.

And MM definitely gets the best out of his players... He actually made Jack Anthony look like a competent full forward!!!

I am looking forward to the day when MM tears shreds off Gibbs in the middle of the G. And then see Gibbs rebuild his inner footballer
