I wouldn't expect Watson to be thrown straight to CHB just yet. He'll play his share of games in 2010, of this I have no doubt (his kicking is a weapon we desperately need back there), but we shouldn't throw him to the wolves so quickly. He ain't ready for Pav, Buddy, Hreevoldt and their ilk I would suspect.
Who is ready for those guys at Carlton and any other team? I suspect Jamo will anchor the FB spot, so who will play these formidable opponents further up the ground?
Pav....bloody difficult match up given his mobility and ground he covers as a forward....lets see we haven't got a match up..maybe Waite, Setanta???
Buddy..see above....Bower has done OK, and maybe Waite again. What happens if Bower is injured? Setanta?
Reiwoldt....Nathan Brown is the obvious choice given his effort in the GF, but I reckon his success came from the midfield pressure his team mates put on the Saints which made the opportunities to exploit rare for Reiwoldt.....we have....um....Waite
Then there's Jonathon Brown and Barry Hall to mind too....um who at CFC can do that? No one really. Setanta had Pavs scalp 3 years ago.
Oh yeah...then there's also Cloke, Dawson, Cox, NicNat etc. We really do need some height down back who can play against the monsters, because Jamo and TBird have been chewed up and spatout in the past because they were too short to compete...same goes with White and Bower really.
So you see there is a good chance Watson will learn his craft in the big league. I suspect that the next 4 months will be focussed on further developing his strength and endurance, and after that if he's fit enough...well there's the beginning of an era.
I'm not saying it's the right thing to do throwing him to the wolves, just that there's reasons why it may happen....unless Austin and Setanta really excel in the preseason.
