I agree. Hard not to believe the AFL was planning on giving out a PP, given the invitation to apply for one and all the rumours coming out. But clearly, once again, they've blinked. Not willing to lose a PR battle with powerful club voices. Also the fact that GC probably need senior bodies even more than draft picks (and their needs are rated more highly than ours).

Of course I have no doubt the AFL will provide some other kind of 'help' to us (since it's all about backroom deals and trying to negotiate outcomes with as little PR fallout as possible). Maybe they'll assist with 'mediation' in getting MM. But yet again, we have a failure of leadership from Gil and the AFL. Instead of setting some clear parameters for assistance and then actually providing it, we have negotiation and politics and PR. I'm expecting improvement at Carlton next year. But what if it doesn't actually come. Then what are the AFL going to do? Offer us free access to another Sam Collins? :banghead: :hitcomputer: :garthp:

We'll probably never know if we actually requested one.

If you can tell us the criteria for the PP then we will all know whether we deserved one or not.

I think the reaction is mostly - why was there a united chorus from both media and Gil about us applying for assistance/pick when we kept saying we didn't want it? We kept getting told we were utterly shit and needed help. So we applied and by doing so all believed that by applying the AFL could give us a pick to use on a mature player. So we did. Then the AFL got pressured by the same media and being the spineless unctuous sycophants they are caved.

The AFL have still yet to make an official statement on the matter, giving any reasons, just using surrogates in the media to tell everyone the news. Why couldn't they even have the courtesy of releasing an official statement to the club and supporters and reasons for their decision.

The whole thing, like so many AFL initiatives ends up being a flower for no other reason than trying to keep the fig leaf across the peanuts sized testicles the AFL have. It is a very poorly run reactionary company.

So we have access to mature players not on AFL lists. How long ago did the AFL decide this? Did they give us enough time to actually scout two players. Did they let us know to resource to find these players accordingly? Were our scouts looking for these prospects? Will any of these mature recruits be tradeable for a top twenty pick? The answer to all of those is no. So we are not prepared for this decision nor will it provide a resource we can actually benefit from because we have invested the time into it beforehand.

Finally, no one will bat an eyelid as Darling lines up for his 3rd or 4th goal this weekend. No one will care that Pendlebury would not be at Collingwood without them getting a PP.

No one cared how Rance got to the Tigers
No one cared how Roughead got to the Hawks or that he played in 4 Premierships

No one will care how Hogan actually ended up at the Dees
No one will remember how Essendon* got banned from the first two rounds of drafts but still got Laverde at pick 19

That Brisbane got a pick with less years of poor performances.

There appears to be a trend above.

I don't think we need the pick. We will have the talent to make it. But the handling of this goes on the same basket as so many other AFL affairs - bemusing at best, bitterly formulaic as always. Watch for Gil's mate to do something different next year. Saints will get a pick next year if we win 5 games and they win 4.

TL;DR AFL has been making decisions around PP for a long time and there is no sense to any of it, nor does the media actually care about it until this year. I don't think its a vendetta against us, just that the AFL are run by a bunch of self interested idiots.

McLachlan clarifies decision to reject priority pick requests
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/09/25/ ... -requests/

Quote:
The AFL Commission yesterday rejected the struggling clubs' proposal of securing an extra, early pick to fast-track their respective rebuilds.

“With these things you’re trying to look at the objective and a bit of the subjective assessment of the clubs and where they’re at,” McLachlan told SEN’s Whateley.

“If you help then you’re doing that at the expense of the competition generally.

“There was an assessment that the clubs had a lot of young talent, I think Carlton have got 18 first round picks and they’ll get the number one pick again this year.

“Gold Coast have got 15 first round picks on their list and they’re going to get picks two and 15 this year if Tom Lynch goes to another club, which is I think accepted, so they’ll get pick 3 as well.

“So there was a view that they needed some mature bodies.”

The Blues and the Suns will instead receive priority access to two state level players each, as reported by SEN Time On host Sam McClure last month.

Good post Stef nailed it a knee jerk second order solution to say hey look we are doing something but bowing to stronger clubs so they actually don't give something adequate and appropriate away

I'm really excited about a measure that might net us another Sam Rowe great way to provide equalisation to a side that won 2 games for the season hasn't kicked over 100 points in more than 55 games and has been near the bottom for a decade

Even worse providing such a crap solution when everyone says free agency is having the consequence of distorting the market towards the stronger clubs

The AFL mouth the words equalisation but don't really believe in it and if they are the custodians of the game they have to effect an equalisation policy irrespective of who is on the bottom and in the state GC and Carlton are in and irrespective of the powerful forces lined up against them -it's called LEADERSHIP

Questions:

Do we have to take two players?
Do they take up two spots on the list, or are we going to be allowed to roll with a list two longer than normal?
Does their salary count inside the cap?
What's the base salary for a bloke picked in a 'special access' draft? Is it the same as a base rookie salary or something different?
What qualifies as a 'State League' player.
What qualifies as a 'mature player'?

If that number includes guys like Garlett, Lang and Pickett then that is incredibly disingenuous way to assess a list and just a soundbite that is easy to repeat for a quick way to end the conversation they don't want to have. If the AFL claims to have done a list analysis and used that as their data point it shows they have the outcome and contrived the data to suit.

Why is the number of first round picks relevant. Every club gets one every year.

In isolation, I think it's fair enough, but in the context of the competition, and what they do to ensure Sydney plays finals every year, it's total bullshit.

But it is what it is, so coaches and recruiters, do your @#$%&! thing.

That's a part of the problem with this decision. We don't have a time machine to put the extra resources into scouting more state league players than we probably otherwise would have. If we thought 2 free hits was a possibility, perhaps we would have had more people watching state leagues for us? Again, the AFL winging it.

Maybe give us decent picks for trade only, e.g can't be used by us in the draft must be traded or not used.
Then we can get some AFL mature bodies who can help us improve like Sheil not some retreads from the hard rubbish collection.

In reading Gil's comments, you can almost see the hands of da meedya and other coaches up his tookus, as he hits on all of the key sound bytes that they love.

- X amount of 1st round picks
- Gold Coast will get pick 3 anyway, so you'll be happy to know they'll still do better than Carlton
- They need mature bodies (ie "Carlton deliberately torpedoed their age profile")

I just hope that this is the end of the PP for good.
