What it shows is that Sydney have a strong core of 12 experienced players with hard bodies who play consistently well week in, week out.
We have 3 (Lappin, Kouta, Stevens) - It's why we're down the bottom and we can't expect to be competing for a spot in the final 8 (let alone top 4) until we expand this group. Lets have a look in 3 years and see if Pagan has managed to produce a group of a dozen players ready to contribute at this level.
It's another example of why we're in for the loooong haul ... but for what it's worth I think it's a perfectly valid illustration of what our club needs. It's cerainly a better model (under the current draft and salary cap conditions) than praying for a Carey or Kernahan to singlehandedly bring back the glory days.
Exactly. Thats all correct. A good summation of the argument, with nothing about Kouta's ability to captain in it. A similar argument could be put forward for sides like Port and Brisbane, and another argument developed for why teams like Geelong, StKilda and West Coast are superior to us: because their rebuilded-core have spent 3-4 years in the system together..... thats probably the situation we'll be in in 3-4 years.
Overall, the real story is told in the 2005 ladder
