Didn't we just do a review of our recruiting structure?

You mean the standard yearly performance review and report on the draft pool for the board?

Not the same thing as this.

Oh really? Every kid has a preference but that's not how the draft works Robbie....

What would have happened if we drafted him exactly? Just a question for you to ponder......

He would have borrowed Boyd's playbook

Precisely.

Darling sent out the same message prior to his draft. It happens. Not to say that a club shouldn't back itself to convince the kid once they get him into their setup.

..maybe, but doubtful.. ....remember, Boyd 'wanted' to come to carlton.. ....so did Goddard, so did Talia.. ....Gibbs hasnt gone home.... ..giants have no soul, will take them a while before they have a strong retention rate..

A shame to see Rogers move on. I don't mind several of his selections since he's been the main man. The pressure is on the club to make the SOS appointment work now.
As for Boekhorst, I wish him good luck. The only concern for me is he's still well below AFL fitness. According to the club, he is doing a "75%" preseason, like the first year recruits. If you're going to draft a player who isn't AFL ready, I would have taken an 18 year old instead of a 21 year old.

Hopefully he proves me wrong.

..he was spruiked up as a mature age player, but it's purely by age, and not experience.. ..he will play some games, but he won't play regularly, not yet ready..

Boyd was locked into Bulldogs from at least August (might have been earlier, but I heard in August).

..with an offer like that!!, of course he was.. ..he still wanted to come to carlton before that.. ..this is the point, a kid may want to get to a specific club, but plenty of variables work against what they want..

..laverde may have wanted bombrez', like watto.. ..goddard's gran sooked it up on draft night.. ..tough titties, draft well and back yourself int keeping the kid happy.. ..bombres' are no rival in this regard, not with their comeuppance on it's way..

So it's not a copybook scenario for Leverde to follow ?

Robbie always gives me the giggles...

Yes first Leverde would need to be drafted interstate.
Then Leverde would need to have the aura of a future footballer of Boyd preferable be taken a taken at number one.
Then have essesndon trade their Skipper but not one to be under a dope cloud.
Then Essendon* would need to trade a top four pick and a ten year by million dollar deal

That right there is " exactly " to the copybook scenario Robbie is suggesting for Leverde...

Robbie is a genius thinker....

Oh I forgot... Even though Leverde wanted to go to Essendon* he gets to a side he never imagined he would ever go to....
That's "exactly" the copybook scenario...

But Docherty did.

As did Bucks to Coll all those years ago. Granted its a very small %

Other clubs passed on JLV as well. And by some random chance, he ends up where he wants to end up.

Just how 'random' was that? Another question to ponder

I think our General Manager of Football Operations might have sent out similar advice to clubs before the 1992 National Draft.

Suckling is another, there's been plenty over the journey. I yearn for the day the clubs call them on it and they get suspended for 2 years.

They really should increase that penalty.

Our first round draft was not Boekhurst.

Our first round draft was Jacksch, Whiley and BB.

I don't mind the "speculative" stab at Boekhurst, if as Jimmae says, SR was told to get the best outside running wingman at that pick. Time will tell whether any of the three picks will "make it", but on what I know to date KJ is a lock-in, Whiley shows a lot of promise as a Carazzo replacing tagger (Pendelbury was a massive wrap for Whiley after he got well tagged by him). Time will tell with BB.

2 of these three will come good.. maybe even 3. That's stellar drafting/recruiting (especially considering our recent drafting history).

A player who has been taken in the first round after 3 or 4 seasons in the WAFL, SANFL, VFL etc should not be a "speculative" selection... refer to Issac Smith, Ballantyne, Harry Taylor... all similar selections!

It also appears BB isn't physically ready!

In spite of all that, I really hope BB is as successful as all those selections!
