When MM arrived my biggest hope was that he could get us to a place whereby at the very least we field a team of blokes who will do anything to win, punch above their weight, and play for the jumper.

I believe we're almost there in that regard.

Remember when the Pies made those GFs in the early 00's with what everyone said was a mediocre list.....I feel he's getting more out of so many players now than he was a year ago, just like he did at Collingwood back then.

Rowe has improved out of sight.
Gibbs is now an A grade midfielder, not the defensive HB Ratts turned him into
Murphy stepping up more and more every week
Judd no longer a battering ram
Good kids coming through....Menzel, Buckley, graham,
Yarran streets ahead of this time last year
Wood miles ahead if Warnock...sadly

We may have gone backwards on the ladder this year, but I reckon we are far better placed than we were a year ago.

I think we're getting harder to play against.

We won't win either of the last 2 games due to the mounting injury toll, so all I'm looking for is that we continue to show a competitive spirit and that a few fringe/young players get an opportunity.

not too much to complaign about.

losing menzel, Thomas and ellard (whats happen to his kicking?) was always going to be the difference.

we looked dead on our feet half way through the last quarter. cant complain about the effort one bit.

that attitude, through in Everitt, Kruezer, Henderson and we probably win that ... Wood is far better around that ground than Warnock. Some more youth this year in the draft. a good [re-season (with as little injuries as possible) and I think finals next year is not without reason.

When Kelly gifts Menzel a goal, not one player sledges him. Every time Selwood is near the ball, bump him hard - smash him the whole game. We don't have that win at all cost attitude yet. When we do, we'll win the close ones.

Great effort considering the injuries.

Was over for the game. Can't fault endeavour but FMD sick and tired of these heartbreaking losses.

Personally witnessed 2 in 3 weeks. Gutted.

Worried we will develop mental issues continually not getting over the line.

Would've won despite the crap umpiring had we not have had injury carnage all night. Jamo hobbling with a calf, Yazz shouldn't have played, Menz shoulder, Daisy knee, Ellard leg. We would've held on if we had an extra rotation.

so what was your assessment of the last 70 seconds of the game - when we gained possession in the back pocket and 6 points down??

were we punching above our weight then trying to win?

or milking the clock?

I agree with this. The umps just had a poor night in general. We got some as well. Really poor end to the game but they probably had us anyway. To coin a Bombers trademark... it was a very brave effort!

Do umpires pay holding the man any more - virtually every time one of our forwards went for a mark a geelong defender had his arms around him. or are they jst being friendly trying to keep our players warm on a cool night?

I think you'll find Menzel got one paid to him (after taking a dive).

Then missed the easy shot for goal.

And speaking of easy misses, one of Murphy's efforts was a bloody shocker.

I think there is a lot to looked forward to with some good talent finally coming through but we lack the killer instinct
Carrazzoo has it but doesn't have the physical tools to apply it.
Simmo has it but cant use it from defence
Judd is getting on in years

This is my biggest knock on Murphy and Gibbs
Because they are senior players and onballers they must set the example that losing is not on the agenda
That's what separates Selwoods and Fyfes from them

Gibbs will win are B and F this year and probably be All Australian. He has improved so much this year.
I have been his harshest critic and happy to eat my words but his last 10 minutes were terrible. A lollypop pass which resulted in a turnover then a feeble chase on the wing where he pointed to one of our youngsters to chase. When it truly counts.
Somehow MM must address the issue over summer.

I just knew we were going to lose despite being so close. The culture is changing for the better but has a fair way to go.
On the flip side Rowe has been a revelation this year and Sheehan looks the goods

We desperately need a genuine ruckman

And Nothing would give me more pleasure to see Geelong go out in straight sets
I hate them

Did anybody watch long enough to see Mathews and Harley say they don't believe we have improved on last year and we clearly arnt a top 8 side? The Duck disagreed. The ladder agrees with them so the simple answer is they are correct but it was still a slap in the face after a good game.

Gutsy effort and we probably would have won if not for the injuries to Menzel and Thomas.
Saying that the Cats were probably the better side and had six more scoring shots than us.
Even though the last free kick was unlucky I think overall we can't blame the umpiring - free kicks favoured us 26 to 20.

Completely agree with that synopsis Humpers.

The only thing you missed is that Chris Scott is such a knob!!!

This is where I disagree with most. I never blame umpires, it's a cop out. As for injuries they don't help but I believe the lack of depth and class is what has cost us. Against Freo it was Fyfe, last night Selwood. If those players had been on our side the result would of been the other way.

Can't fault the effort and the game style. It is as good as I have seen from a Carlton team in a long while. We just lack class. That ability to finish, to make the right decision under pressure, to understand what it takes to win. Get a few of those type players and it will be a very different story.

Went to the game for the first time in a while. First qtr subdued on field and in crowd and Etihad has that basketball feel. But this was a brave loss much as we hate that. 3 men down and almost grabbed it.

Carrazzo has been a whipping boy but he was excellent and in a side with poor leadership, he has lots. Yarran could be as good as G Ablett if he improves his engine and concentrates for 100 minutes. His cameos are exquisite but he has talent to be one of the best. Was listening to radio at half time and Parko gave Yarran a fearful spray.

Sheehan was terrific for a player so inexperienced. Very disappointing that when he set up our first goal Carrazzo was the only team mate who came within about 20 metres of him. We have a dull, uncharismatic bunch of introverts. For all Robbo's faults he gives spark and enthusiasm. Gibbs is at the level now we have wanted him to be at for years. He will play 300 games and win 3 b and f's. Murph is a classy player but as captain he has no prescence. Daisy has lots of spark, time will tell whether he can regain his best, but he was very brave last night, let's hope staying on didn't aggravate his knee. Menzel is a serious talent. Bell has a number of weapons. Too often we move the ball slowly. Casboult is off the boil but they rarely move the ball quickly to him when he is one out and we really miss a quick small fwd like Betts or Garlett. Wood is admirable but he was beaten last night. I was right near the free ag Docherty. Initially i was waiting for the whistle but on replay looked soft. But to use a Paganism we need to concentrate on what we can control. Simmo has been fantastic for years but it is disappointing that he has never worked hard to improve his right foot. Last night, trapped on his right a pass to set up a shot at goal was a floater and spoiled. Improving those little things an win games. I shouldn't bring Ratts in, but a different decision then and we'd be a much better side now. We have suffered for a number of years with an inexperienced coach without fully rounded management skills.

Anyway last night was a mirror of the season. Despite the trashing of our list, This year and next year it is about eighth quality, so this year has been a fail. I expect much better next year. Medium long term the outlook is less rosy.

actually his team and his tactics with many, many injuries has been much better than hinkley.. who got 2 injuries and his team has walked off the cliff....

no interchange players to a big chunk of a game helped geelong get over the line and gifted them that win

blaming mm is laughable....

tired players who gave it their all will not be a machine.

as well as injuries on and off the park too many non contributers .

but oveRall . this is exactly the threshold expected
