Best thing for him to do is come out on Sunday night and put in a master class performance against the Filth.

The contract in itself is a good one for everyone, but is it right for a club that desperately needs to re-build?

If we're serious we'd be taking the compo pick potentially giving us 2 in the top 5.

I agree and I find some of the decision making at the moment hard to understand.

Having said that it's now done and we move on hoping that the key areas in Recruitment and Development are addressed professionally and somewhat urgently.

we can still rebuild with an approaching his prime 25-year old number 1 pick.

imo Gibbs is worth more than a top ten pick, especially given our recent history of drafting projects and roughies.

What happened to the days where we loved our players and never wanted to see them leave?

It seems these days everyone needs to be traded. Gibbs is right now our best player, is 25 and has showed a huge amount of loyalty to us. It's such a shame that he and this signing isn't celebrated more.

Why have we distanced ourselves from our players?

Correct. The extension for a 7th year is dependent on a nomination.

He's a dud, I mean how many chances does he need to win the rising star.....

AFL reporting $600k per year - still good value

A rebuild where you shed all your quality players is stupid. You end up where Aints are - and I don't want to be there. It's not just ground zero list wise but also financially . People who think we should burn the place down are deluded.

This contract seems like good value in itself,
assuming the incentives are fairly structured.

Credit to Mckay for that.

However the bigger picture of how the list evolves is the key.
I think committing to Murphy and Gibbs is a fair nucleus.
If Cripps proves to be A Grade (or at least B+), then we have the first block in place for a rebuild.

How you structure the list management strategy around that is vital.
Ideally we would have two young A/B grade KPPs to act as bookends - sadly Hughes, Rogers & co have stuffed that up badly.
Giles is still a hope,
but the track record isn't great.
I don't think anyone still has much confidence that Watson will end up an A grade KPP.
McCarthy and Mitchell were big mistakes in the context of our greater list. We had to get one of those right.
I can't see Levi being a number 1 forward - He'll always be a mercurial tall, hopefully more like Paddy Ryder than Tyrone Vickery, but he's not young either.

So as Jamison gets older and proppier, Hendo tops out, and Kreuzer fails to provide any confidence in his longevity, it's not rocket surgery to see that our stocks of talls are lacking for a bottom 6 team.

That, combined with our midfield of Robinson, McLean, Carrazzo, Bell & co ........

I can't see how anyone thinks we can top up and tweak a bit to get our premiership window back open.

Malthouse Hater/Frothers will point to the fact that a certain number of these guys were good not long ago, how could they have dropped off.. etc etc
But the reality is that was the past.
We can't live in the warm cuddly Brett Ratten past.
It's done, gone.

So we signed Gibbs?
Great.
Gibbs and Murphy were not #1 draft pick failures.
Whoopy Doo. Hooray for us.
What a lot of angst went into the Bryce Gibbs decision.

I'm more concerned about who we gather around them.

The way they're playing now, I'd get rid of half the rest.

But that's a topic for another thread ......

$600k is very good.

I'm warming to the idea of going after Frawley.

He's big and mean.

We need mids, but we also need an injection of cauliflower into this list. Frawley fits the bill.
