That comes into play. But so does lack of work-rate, goal-kicking, field-kicking, overhead ability. There's a bit more to being an elite midfielder than there was a decade ago.

..overhead marking ability, gotcha.. ..murphy isn't much chop for that, Gibbs actually is (very good in fact).. ..work rate, Gibbs would coast, Murphy one way runner, for the majority of both of their careers to date.. ..kicking ability is average, not as good as either of them unfortunately.. ....goal kicking fits in with average overall kicking.. .... ..what about urgency?, ability to withstand a tackle?, willingness to strongly run out every game?, contested ball winning ability?, clearance ability?, ground ball winning ability?..

..i agree that when you say kicking is average, very limited overhead marking ability,, that it does seem like he'd not have been the star he was, since those have always been the knock on him.. ..work rate though i think is more a recent thing, possibly tied in with playing hampered.. ..and also the very attacking shoot out style that was coached.. ..the will to push himself was monumental so if he can regain that, and full fitness, his dynamic ballistic playing style does elevate him above the sum of average skills..

right now hes a great clearance machine.. or was.. we dont even know what hes going to be like now
but he certainly lacks versatility.... what type of role model is he for menzel if hes playing in the forward line.. he doesnt lead and then double and triple lead.. he wont chase his man up the field.. its rather pathetic

yeah he has that attitude that he doesnt need to do those things.. because hes so good at what HE does..

watch bartel when he has to go forward and kick a goal or two.. then u can swing him across half back where he WILL stand in the hole... and he will create.. and yeah if you need him for a clearance hes there too.

With Graham, it's more about where he gets his disposals.
He spends too much time behind the ball getting cheapies. It slows play down and allows the opposition to set their zone.
Its good to see players are getting feedback on their deficiencies.
