Thanks Bluey.

How much better do people rate Richmond's drafting?

We might be better, but it is pretty much damning with faint praise, we are still shite.

The proof is our triumphal win against Richmond in last years final.

That really IS damning us with faint praise.

Since 2004 (10 years ago, could reasonably expect one or two of those to be playing), our ND picks have been:

Russell
Hartlett
Blackwell
Bryan
Raso

Murphy*
Kennedy**
Bower
Edwards

Gibbs*
Hampson**
Grigg**
Austin**(?)
Benjamin
Anderson

Kreuzer*
Browne
Armfield*

Yarran*
Robinson*
O'Keefe
Tiller

Lucas*
Davies
Kerr

Watson*
McCarthy
Mitchell
McInnes*
Duigan

Bootsma*
Rowe*
Buckley*

* still playing
** playing elsewhere
Excludes Rookie promotions

33 ND picks in 8 years.
Clearly too reliant on rookie draft and trading.
12 players still playing for us, 4 playing elsewhere.

Only real quality remaining (for us or others) is Murphy, Kennedy, Gibbs, Kreuzer.....but Kennedy aside, the other 3 probably big under achievers for pick 1's. Possibly harsh on Murphy.

Have deliberately excluded the last 2 years to give them time.

Horrible. Just horrible.

Like I said if only our recruiting was as bad as only recruiting a an Oakley-Nicholls.

Is that enough of a story for you Kouta?

And our recruiting has been as bad as our drafting... :banghead:

..it's not rocket science, a team that needed an almost complete build, drafts a pure mid in 05 and then waits until 2013 to draft another.. .a kpp in 05 and the none until five years later..

Then we grab hold of players like yarran and walker and play them as HB flankers. Even Simpson

Bootsma is everything wrong with our recruiting. Not the kids fault obviously, but when we said he is a flanker who could end up a winger it summed it up.

We need to pick players for roles and let them grow into AFL playing in a role they know.

Cripps I like as he is a ball winner and will play that role, hopefully not turned into a forward.

Giles played as a key defender and should be left to play there all year at any level. Yes I know he has played forward early days.

Temay was turned into a defensive forward last year. I thought he was a small defender when we drafted him? Why not let him develop there considering we lack in those positions.

I think we destroy players development by swinging them around multiple positions. Flexibility can come once they are established.

Look no further than the team that beat us Sunday evening to see how things work.

Got a President who doing the right things who clearly is setting the right course for the club as a whole club on a national and further beyond, international stage. Apart from the odd comment he knows his role and place (he's stated he stays clear of the footy dept; it's not his domain) but seems really passionate more importantly pretty professional in his approach.

Got a CEO in Keith Thomas who knows his job really well. Comes across as honest and hardworking, even if he's a redlegs man.

Got a no nonsense, honest, straight talking, down to earth but extremely knowledgeable coach in Ken Hinkley. He knows his trade and is always learning.

Hasn't hurt them in getting a world class fitness professional back to the club to get the players into shape.

Living in this state, It's always felt that the Crows has been the big brother and Port the little brother but for the first time that i can remember it feels like Port is the bigger, better run and making strides club. The crows are on the nose and Port are doing and saying all the right things on and off the field.

It didn't take them that long to be going in the right direction probably a good hard look at themselves.

I think for the first time in a long time Port have been honest with themselves, their players and their supporters and everyone bar Crows people think it's great and at this stage it's working.

Pretty sure there's not much self honesty coming from our club.

I think you are being a bit harsh on Pagan

He had no alternative but to bring in Elshaugh and end the continuity of leadership and culture that Barrassi and Harris started in the 1960s. Mick Martyn needed his 13 games to reach 300. A must!
McKay as captain, won the best and fairest, then retired barely 30 years of age - unheard of in the record books of AFL/VFL history.
Subconsciously Denis destroyed the small kernel of player leadership left at the club - the only hope of a revival.

In his wake, he left an overweight Lance, and undisciplined Waite, a deranged match winner in Fev, a frustrated Walker etc.. One cannot build from these genetically and spiritually damaged seeds.

He even tried to dismember the great Kouta in front of the group.

2004 was the year the Blues were buried spiritually

Notice how the coach doesn't seem to make much difference? Young coach, Old experienced coach - doesn't matter.

We have become a Richmond, post 1982....who also went into a spiritual spiral of self destruction. they are still feeling the effects 30+ years later.

But there is hope. The Blues will awaken, and it could even be this season. Nobody knows.

Certainly Mick doesn't know - otherwise he would have written another book and gone on a national tour.

But all is not lost Mr S....

Mr Swann is on the Job

You make some very good points

Port at the end of the 2012 season when Hinkley took over, was widely rated as having the poorest list and serious off field financial problems (didn't AD get involved at one point to stop them from going under?)

Port is a proud club, with coupled history prior to joining the AFL. They also won a flag in 2004. Winning culture isn't that old at the club.

Koshi has been a breath of fresh air - not only to the Port Adelaide Football club, but also to the AFL in general.

Their season last year, from where they came from was just sensational. They came back in at least 3 games that I can remember is amazing fashion. Against the crows with Wingard playing like the Dominator.

And almost knocked off the cats in their last final after finishing the pies off the week before with a brilliant last 10 minutes.

can we do that??

If one understands the continuity that the blues enjoyed from the 1960s to the early 2000s - a 40 year stretch.

The continuity I am referring to concerns the change rooms, where the players bond and hand over batons, experience, wisdom and honesty.

If that is disrupted - there is nothing you can do in the short term. There are no quick fixes.

It can be rebuilt, but only with hard work, pain and honesty. You can recruit the best player in the land and give him the captaincy and all the servants and service that he wishes....but difference it will not maketh Mr S - we have witnessed this first hand....

I agree with that.....
but nothing to do with just a shit list and a new coach...
they have a great up and coming list
ours is long in the tooth and holes everywhere...
they have a couple of good forwards in westhoff and schultz.. the other guy is great too.. hits the packs hard and contests physically but cant kick.

we have a hot n cold 30/31 year old waite
a swingman in hendo
and jamo

thats our spine
there isnt anyone else front or back

then we have this very thin midfield
theres is a ripper midfield

and they keep adding to it....

youll see improvement in the doggies too.. alot of that has to do with the midfielders they have been getting in... and dont forget they also lost ward

its outrageous what we did...
and i hate what we have been doing recently too... just stocking up on single paced inside mids... makes me sick to think we dont understand the game one iota.
so yeah we shoot ourselves in the foot....the foot has been shot off by us years ago... now we keep shooting that phantom foot.

you know people that have lost limbs often say they feel them even though theyre gone....
were like that with our foot........ and the big 12 gauge shotty
