I heard some Geelong supporters claiming the same thing with Ablett but I dont understand the rationale. Marc Murphy is 23 years old. AFAIC, Carlton has put 5 years of development into him and he's still approaching the peak of his career.
I'm happy for him to chase the money after he's given us 10 years of service but he has the opportunity to enjoy sustained success with his mates. Bailing out after 1 year would be pretty weak IMO.

Good post, i agree 100%. Murphy to date has achieved nothing with Carlton and he owes the club another 2 years.

I'd be pretty disappointed if Murphy left for GWS, but if the money on offer was that compelling then it'd the AFL who I'd be pissed off at.

Murphy just finished a 10 minute interview with 3AW. About 15 questions, but not a single one on the GWS story.

It's a curious omission given all the chatter around it. knowing a bit about how these things work, I'd say Murphy had them agree to not ask him about it during the interview. If he did (and I suspect it's highly likely) I wonder why?

If I had to bet on it, I'd say he's gone.

But with your 'maybes' you're jumping to conclusions too. Just different ones to mine.

I am trying to be positive that's all. This talk is making me less excited about the season...

We simply cannot afford to lose him.

But we couldn't afford to lose Fev, either.

I'm sure I read a while back that Murphy knocked back going to the Lions for several reasons including that he was a North supporter and held high regard for our coach at the time - Pagan.

I am not sure it was becasue of the interstate factor, so he may have no issue going interstate.

I hope this doesn't drag out and by the way I still can't understand why he wouldn't be part of our leadership group.

And for 3AW not to mention the Giants when they had him on radio this week just adds to the uncertaintity with Murphy post 2011.

He has a contract. Outside that, he owes the club nothing other than to train and play his best every week until it runs out.
They pay him according to it and he plays footy in return.

We look at CFC through different eyes to the players. To them it's a job. It's a great job, one they love doing, but it's still a job. They are placed under a bit of pressure to stay by their mateship and teamsmanship.

Most of us have had jobs. Some of us even liked them. Some of us worked in a team oriented environment under duress.

Most of us would have left for another job with the same job description if the new company offered us triple our wages.

It's not the same as a supporter changing allegiance to a club just because the club is in hard times. That's just NOT on!
Let's not confuse blind loyalty and support for Carlton Footy Club with turning up to work, which is what the emotive among us are doing IMO.

Our biggest concern here is Sheedy....I'm sure Murphy would love to have someone with his standing/experience as his coach...

But even worse, Sheedy always despised us and would still have the 99 Preliminary final fresh in his memory.....

Murph is a great player but doesn't have the inspirational flair of a leader. We hung on to Fev for one season too long and if Murph leaves it will be a season or two too early. While things for us will look up in the next few years, GWS will be the Freo of the next 15 years - always shite and struggling. It will be his loss.
Lets be honest, we aren't short of midfielders, especially ones we can develop over the next 12 months to fill murphy's role. Good luck to him if he decides to go, we'll be fine. Fantastic if he decides to stay.

I agree. We will be fine if he decides to go but i realy hope he stays.

If the Pies somehow win the flag in 11' i reckon they may lose a players. Scully would also be high on the GWS wishlist.

..you're kiddin' right..?.. ..after judd and murphy, the midfield drops down a peg or two..by far our 2nd best midfielder, which is nothing to sneeze at when considering our number one..

As others have pointed out, far western Sydney is not the Gold Coast or Brisbane, and its certainly not the eastern suburbs of Sydney or cosmopolitan Melbourne.

I had a long discussion with two Sydney players last night at my daughters 21st birthday party. Both boys are from Melbourne and both love living in Sydney. They pay a fortune to rent near the SCG but they love the city. Both were scathing about western Sydney and wonder why anyone in their right mind would consider living there. They feel GWS will have a lot tougher time recruiting players than GC, and that the shithole location will influence players decisions.

I think geography and family will be a major influence on Murphy. He could have gone to Brisbane but he didn't, despite the strong pull of the father son club relationship. He is ensconsed in Melbourne with family and GF and the latte lifestyle at a strong club on the rise. The possibility of huge dollars will give him pause for thought, but I reckon he'll stay.

Lets hope so.
