I love the politeness, really appreciated.

I dont think we need to follow the leads of European soccer and the NFL but i think the facts are that (from a marketing point of view) that a change of colour draws in additional revenue as most die hard fans head out and buy the new strips regardless of if they love or hate it. While i havent seen the actual details of the sales of the White strip i know if i was to buy a new Carlton strip it would be the white one ove rthe Navy Blue one. Why? Because its different.

I think its interesting that Collingwood actually wear their alternative strip in the away game they play against Carlton, have done for the last 2 seasons. All the Blues do is wear the Navy Blue socks with the white band. Hardly helpful if you are trying to distinguish between the two.

I can hardly agrue against the NEED for alternative strips but it has been decreed by the AFL so why not take advantage of it. I dont think standing up for something like this issue is really woth it. I look at the consessions given to The Suns and GWS and THAT is something we should really be worried about. The fact is 80% of the time we will wear the Navy Blue and i think we should be secure in our past to know that Navy Blue, White, Yellow, M & M's NewBlue or whatever it is, we will ALWAYS BE THE NAVY BLUES.

Spirited debates... LOVE IT

Bradcon, we both want the same thing - a strong Carlton football club, so I am happy to have a spirited debate with you without resorting to getting mean-spirited.

Where I am coming from is that branding/marketing etc as you point out is VERY important....the unfortunate thing is that I don't think the people at the marketing dept at Carlton fully understand how important the branding of the NAVY BLUE guernsey is - hence their willingness to wear orange, yellow, white and God knows how many colours in the future.

We can go down the path of a North Melbourne, Melbourne etc and have a nomadic guernsey -sold to the highest bidder with 15 different variations every 3rd week or we can offer some stability and strength ala Collingwood, Essendon* and Geelong. I know which one I prefer.

I wonder when Essendon* will be wearing pale blue as their clash guernsey colour? They have just as much reason as Carlton to wear pale blue. The colour has nothing to do with Carlton.

Simply illogical for Carlton, Collingwood or any other of the original clubs to be wearing "clash guernseys" anyway.

Does anyone know what matches Carlton are forced to wear "clash guernseys"?

If it is against St Kilda, Melbourne or any other of the original 11 clubs I think that will be the deciding factor in whether or not to renew my membership.

Is baby blue this year's equivalent of a tacky, 'provocative' slogan, i.e. it's crap, but at least everyone's talking about it? Marketing gone mad?

If we must have an alternate strip, then what is (or was) wrong with the white one? Sure, the majority would probably prefer to not have it at all, but at least its 'colours' were something of a reversal of our usual strip, and vaguely fitting as a result. But baby blue?

Was this an edict from the AFL (and if so, why?), or is this some sort of clutch for more merchandising dollars?

Why the f*%k are people so fixated in this industry of changing things that don't need changing?? Nothing better to do or? Fair dinkum, people aren't happy until they turn things into a mess.

Take for example, North's clash top, and that is a reason why people shouldn't stuff around too much in this area.

Why not have a different clash top every year. Would make wearing the 17th premiership top that much more enjoyable. Not to mention the merchandise $ for the club.

The day sponsors were put on to guernseys was the end of anything truly traditional.

Its the 21st century guys... embrace it.

Yep, since the Elliott regime saw fit to bastardise the club mongram, I really don't care.
Just win bloody games. Ok ?

Unless you're a club that gets 18 home games at the MCG, then you have to sacrifice your tradition.

Some don't get it.

If I wanted to see a different guernsey each year, I would follow that pathetic round ball game where players are sold overnight.

We're not in danger of going the way of North, so the money isn't that important in this case.

I hate people complaining about AFL becoming a business, when it becoming something people can make a living from has pushed the athleticism and professionalism of the game that far forward. If you want grass roots, go local, simple as that.

Also: don't care about the clash jumper, it's no big deal. It makes the club cash, and damn it I love the white jumper. Always have, it looks fantastic. I'm confident any changes will look good too.

If the Carlton executives truly understood how important the guernsey was to marketing (and therefore making money) they would do something similar to Collingwood and ensure their ''clash guernsey" had slightly different side panelling, a different back and otherwise was very, very, very similar to the traditional guernsey. eg Carlton could have a white side panel under the arms but otherwise have a navy blue guernsey.

People think all marketing slogans equate with making money..... if they want to protect their business (and make money) they have to protect their brand. Simple stuff - surely?

Calton are in the same basket as North Melbourne now that the guernsey means s**t all.

pale blue/sky blue, I was close.

Either way it's really disapointing

The club has lost the plot.

Ratten will come and go like every coach who has come before him, but the jumper is something that should never change.

If you can't get big sponsors, change the jumper so we can sell something new and make up for our lack of big sponsors.

This is worse than any claim that Sticks is appointing his mates and Ian Coutts is a hack.

Greg Swann is earning his dollars. :banghead:

Our jumper is our brand and should never change.

Clash jumpers v Traditional jumpers for juzzy...
