Well, if you can believe Caro in The Age this morning, who says "Carlton as well as Essendon* has expressed heavy interest in Mark Williams", then you'd say it's odds-on that one of either Laidley or Choco will be at the club next year.

Choco and Hirdy would make for a fairly good duo I would have thought.

It'll sell a lot of memberships and sponsorships.
They might even get some positive press for a change.

Did appointing Pagan after our first spoon sell a lot of memberships ?
I have a feeling it'll be Laidley to Carlton and Choco to the Bummers...

I hope it goes this way;

We do our end of season review,
Identify the areas we need to improve,
Identify the people we think might help us improve,
Interview all those people,
Pick the best available people.

From were I sit we are at least 3 weeks away from this process.

Personally I'm of the belief that Hird comes from the Tim Watson school of coaching, i.e. the shit one.

Yeah......how many really great players of modern times have made good coaches?.....not many.

Barassi....Matthews.....Blight....Coleman...Jesaulenko....Nicholls....Walls.....about it?

Rumours flying around that Knights is gone and the williams / hird combination floating could well and truly be on the money.

Roos, gun footballer.
Parkin played over 200 games, won a B&F, captained the Hawks and earned 5 Big V jumpers. No slouch as a player.
Sheedy, 250 Games, BOG in the '74 Grand Final, 8 Big V jumpers, voted by journalists as the player of the year in 1974. A fair bit better than the 'back pocket plumber' tag would suggest.

While Warby is right as a rule of thumb, there are of course exceptions. But back to the original point, listening to his commentary and what he has to say for the viewers of On the Couch, he doesn't offer a whole lot of insight into the tactics of the game. Of course I don't for a second believe that to be his full deck but he doesn't even hint at anything clever.

Still, it's a bit harsh comparing him to Watson. Tim struggles reading an autocue.

With all respect John.M.........Parkin was a very good back pocket.....Roos was a very good CHB; and Sheedy was NOT a great player by any stretch.....we saw him play in all of those 60's and 70's games against us; and he was a thug as a player.

None of those 3 players should be categorised as being on the same level as the absolute champions I spoke about.

The great coaches who WERE ordinary players include....John Kennedy...Allan Jeans; and Tom Hafey for 11 flags.

Ofcourse we want Laidley given his premiership success as a coach.

Given what he achieved with a very average North side, I think we could do worse.

Fair enough, but I'd argue that Jezza, Big Nick and probably Coleman weren't particularly good coaches. Just because they scored a flag as captain/coach or outright coach doesn't qualify them as such - otherwise you're going to have to put Tony Jewell, Whoosha and Hawthorn's '91 Premiership Coach who was so ordinary I keep forgetting his name.

I reckon Roos was every bit as good a player as Rob Walls. And I still think Sheedy was more talented than his mythological 'plumber' tag suggests - sure he was a filthy thug though. But they're not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Once again John M......John Coleman did his knee in round 8 of '54 and retired, after kicking 14 goals the previous week against Fitzroy.

7 years later; he took on the Coaching job at Essendon* in 1961; and took them to Premiers the next year in 1962 and again in 1965.

Greatest Full Forward of all time......and great Coach.

Alan Joyce and Tony Jewell each won a flag by default......great sides that would've won anyway.
