Not sure what game others were watching but Andrew Carrazzo is possibly the worst kick in our team. Gets the ball which is great but his field kicking killed us. Not his fault we lost but gee it rips the heart out when we turn it over and they score.

Spot on and as unfortunate as it sounds he not going to get any better. I think Carrazzo needs to become our main shutdown option. He can run with anyone and can win the ball and i think is our best option to close someone down.

PROs

- Edwards first game, the kid will only get better but was super impressed

- Cameron Cloke's endevour in the ruck, negated his opposition whilst on.

- When we were up and running our midfield quartet of Hadley, Stevens and Judd looked fanastic, but alas all three were no way near match fit

- Fev's chasing, every time he ran his guts off trying to do the hard work for the team. He has critics and at times rightly so, but yesterday he seemingly put the team first before anything else which is i think all we ask

CONs

- Setanta in the ruck didn't get a look in, everytime he went into the middle late in the quarter we lost momentum. One of the key areas where we lost the game for mine. Play him at CHB on a big forward and stop killing him like this.

- Carazzo's kicking. I love the way he finds the footy and does the hard stuff, but his kicking is woeful, absolutely terrible, especially when entering the forward 50

PROS:-

MURPHY - Was sublime. Please sign him up for another 3 years ASAP. Will be an awesome partner in crime to Judd.

JUDD - For somebody who only played 75min of football and was underdone to rack up 22 possessions is pretty bloody good!

THORNTON - Best game for the blues in a few years IMHO.

CONS:-

CARRAZZO's KICKING:- Just truly woeful. Honestly, he's a great player and all but if he's gonna continue to kick like that then i'd have no hesitation in dropping him. Setanta's is a much more accurate and he's only been playing the frigin game for 4 years!

WAITE'S 2nd EFFORTS:- So frustrating cause he is such a unique athlete.

HOLDING UP PLAY:- Still doing this! Keep it moving boys!!!!!!!!!!!!

STILL FEV CONSCIOUS:- We really need to stop doing this. I know Fisher is injured but geez, let's try and utilise Hartlett / Edwards / whoever!

Looking forward to next week when we can hopefully add Aisakie, Hamspon AND Kruezer.

Stick Setanta down back, Hammo and Cloke in the ruck with Aisakie playing bit part on flanks and rucking aswel and send Matty to the forward line.

Word is Judd shouldnt be playing for at least another 5 -6 months, I dont know if we should have him in to be honest.

If that is the case,we should rest him,if he is ok it will take about 1/3 of the season before he gets results, same as Stevens.

Can't believe how many Blues fans are accepting and positive as we enter our 7th year of dismalness with a dismal performance.

I know we are learning a new game plan and we have several stars underdone, but we were playing Richmond. Next week against the Saints will be really ugly.

Cons - Desperation, endeavour, intensity. Thrashed in all aspects by the Tiges. two examples - Waites lackadaisical effort when running towards the ball being outmarked by Hughes running with the flight because he was more desperate. The contrast between Tambling running full bore with the flight to mark with Richo and Jamison barrelling towards him and Gibbs dropping an easy uncontested chest mark on half back because he took his eyes off it. Result Richmond goal! I hate it when other supporters highlight examples of him pulling out but he is super talented and needs to keep his eyes on the ball. He is young and very talented, an excellent tackler and a smart kid, but compare him to players of similar experience, is he as intense and as desperate as Joel Selwood?

Tackling - Are we training for international rules or Australian rules? How is it that the guy with the best tackling technique - Gibbs - has been at the club for the least time!

Waite is not, has never been and never will be a CHB. He ineffectively double teamed Richo, made his requisite number of mistakes and was barely within ten metres of his opponent all night. I like Waite, and he is super talented but he is a natural forward. Move him up forward because we need someone to kick it to other than Fev

We are so predictable, kick it to Fev no matter how many are on him. If he has 4 opponente how come we don't have 3 free players?

Jamo is more suited to smaller opponents - would have been ideal match up for Pettifer

Play Setanta down back, give him a position and leave him there. He is potentially a very good half back.

Pace - we need more, the Tiges ran all over us

Badly need another small forward

Pros
Judd and Stevo got thru the game
TBird was terrific can't believe fans are criticising him
Murphy very good
Edwards promising debut
Grigg looked lost at times but did enough to suggest he has real talent. Needs a right foot
Bower - looks like an athlete who took up footy at the same time as Setanta but promising in a Gary Cowton type of way. Needs confidence, but has the skills to be a good half back
Cloke - if half our team put in like him we would have won. Fantastic endeavour, hope he stays injury free

I agree, because this was possibly the weakest side on paper even thou Richmond showed some good signs a couple of years ago.The team underdone they say, what have most being doing for 6 months eating donkin donuts and drinking.I thought only four players like Judd,Stevens,Hadley and Ohailipin were.Thornton was fine and showed it most.

There was no excuses for that hiding we got after being 4 goals up,Ratten needs to bite at the players, not be too friendly saying we will get better. If you want to party before a game,go ahead but you want be selected for the 22 and you will find it hard to be in the team and possibly traded or gone after your contract up.

Pro's

Jamo - Was beaten but learnt a lot and will be a great FB soon. moves a little like SOS

Murphy - really showed signs of going to the next level. Must be a relief to have Judd in and Stevens back.

2nd quarter- WOW! looked really smooth...Cloke is quite a ruckman...Judd was good...ball movement was silky.

Con's

Santa- was killed in the ruck

Forward line - very fragile...missing Fisher badly.

Decision making- poor ball use in the 2nd half...stopped still a lot...makes opposition teams flood easily...frustrating to watch

Waite- is not a CHB...he needs to create not stop.

Ratten -concerns me that he didnt play with the structure enough when the momentum was lost. Only obvious move was T-Bird going into the forwardline.

I disagree.

I understand where your coming from but i honestly believe we can fit these 3 in the same side.

Kreuzer in the Forward line.
Hampson as our #1 ruck rotating with Cloke and Aisake playing the flanks and ruck fill-in from the bench!

PROS - Hartlett to take an extended break after his brain lapse

CONS - The fact Hartlett can get a game, doesn't show much for our forward structure.

It's amazing how different supporters see different things - Not doubting your marks but I saw it slightly different.

My player rankings/observations:

Jamison...tried hard, great future, needs to bulk up. 6/10 (3/10 - was well beaten but don't reaaly blame him to much - very difficult match up)

Thornton...one off the best for 3 qts, bit loose. 6.5/10 (8/10) Apart from his usual few bad disposals per game I thought he was our best 4 qtr player)

Scotland...courageous, seems a bit one paced, serviceable. 6/10 (4/10 - seems to be off the ground through rotations a lot but was generally good when on)

Waite...showed flashes of brilliance...still inconsistent. 5/10 (Agree)

Grigg...read play well, kicking seems to lack depth, will improve. 4/10 (3.5 agree)

Houlihan...thought he was good tonight, his skill/ decision making stood out. 7/10 (Agree)

Gibbs...showed poise/class, consistency will come, reminds me of (dare i say it ) James Hird. Give him time 5.5/10 (3/10 - Showed a lack of intensity and hardness when required - very disapointed with this aspect of his game)

Simpson...started brilliantly...never gives up, a leader of the club. 7/10 (6/10 - agree)

Murphy... as for Simmo, but fades out of game, lacking fitness?, obvious class. 6/10 (Agree)

Stevens... good all night, will be better for run, lacking match fitness, class evident. 6.5/10 (Agree)

Judd...this bloke will be worth every cent. Class above everyone else, obviously lacking match fitness. 7.5/10 (6/10 - agree)

Hadley... got into it as game went on, will be a good addition to the team, his talent is evident. 5/10 (Agree)

Carrazzo...love this bloke, mister consistent, kicking seems to have improved. 7/10 (6/10 - Agree although his kicking lets him down at times)

Cloke...imo was our best. Battled against the odds all night, great effort, adds some hardness. 7.5/10 (7/10 - Agree - thought he tried really hard all night)

Harlett...struggled, presented but couldn't get into it.Looks like a long holiday coming up, stupid play. 3/10 (agree - penetrating kick though)

Edwards... has talent but got in Fevs way and kicking was inconsistent. Shows how good the Fish really is. Give him another chance. 3/10 (Agree)

Betts...EDDIE,EDDIE,EDDIE....needs to do more than kick the occasional crumbing goal. My kids love him, but he needs to offer more. 3.5/10 (Good 2nd quarter but so inconsitent around the ball)

Setanta...love his passion, lacking fitness due to illness, will improve, we must perservere. 4/10 (3/10 - agree)

Fev...started well, tried hard all night but our fwd structure seems non-existent. Seems to love having Hoops nearby, we can't rely on him to win all our games. 5.5/10 (Agree)

Bannister...gives 100% but is he really up to this level. When i think of good stoppers i see, Ling, K.Cornes etc they hurt you both ways. Bannister is purely negative, no attacking flair. 3/10 (Agree)

Jackson...like him, but disposal lets him down. Lacking penetration. 4/10 (3/10 - Don't think he adds anything to the team)

Bower...hard at it, decision making lets him down. Juries out. 3.5/10 (Thought he has had better games but think he will definately make it)

Thought our tackling was absolutely atrocious tonight and were forced wide to often particularly our forwards.

Summing up....i watched the game on tv which gives a different perspective.

We seemed to lack match fitness, only Cloke, Simmo, Murphy, Carrots, Judd, Stevo, Jamo, Thornton, Fev, Scotland, Gibbs and Houlihan received pass marks in my book, with Waite and Hadley borderline. 12 out off 22 , we need a more even contribution.

PS...WTF is up with Wallsy..his negative comments are starting to grate. We all know Fev has flowered up, but he seems to have a personal vendetta against him. He also said that Stevo was lazy for not chasing...well Wallsy, he had a broken neck, he's lacking match fitness, he runs more in a quarter than you ran in your whole career, build a bridge :x

I agree 100% with Ryan. I don't believe it makes us too top heavy. Having said that I would like to know your definition of 'top heavy'. I'm assuming you mean taller but slower because of the weight? height? something like that.

Aisake (203) and Hampson (202) are very very fast and good below the knees

Kreuzer (200) has a good engine and is fantastic below the knees.

They do not make us slower or cumbersome. They are footballers of the future...and we've got them. You can add Setanta (199) to that breed, as well as Waite (194) and Jamison (195).

Once upon a time, (70's) it was considered unrealistic and crazy to have 6 foot wingmen...but they became the norm...the Collingwood wingman...it was an advantage they created over other teams...as long as they were athletic and could run well they were going to trump the short arses. Hence the birth of the modern game. Speed and height.

These guys Ryan includes are not Michael Gardiners or Stephen King types; big, cumbersome and relatively slow.

IMO we need to create some advantages in pace somewhere on the park because Saints are a quick team, and that's in the ruck.

Maybe Aisake and Setanta should be our wingmen...or FB and CHB....or FF and CHF...let Fevola cut lose from the FP leading out marking and kicking them from 50m, whilst the ultra tall forwards remain as beacon sized targets; just very athletic.

These guys are the future. Put games into them in 2008. Why not start now.

Pro's - we will improve

Con - despite all the reasons aired we still lost to the 2008 wooden spooners

ps when will Bryce Gibbs begin to stand up to the rigours of AFL football? Doesn't necessarily have to dominate games but how about showing a belonging at this level.

Pros: Edwards game on debut, Judd had a few moments of brilliance, Thornton was good, Stevo threatened at times, Murph was good in the 1st half and Cloke played his heart out

Cons: We lost to Richmond, its the 1st game of the year after the off season and we struggled to get an obviously underdone team on the park!!

Had the intensity and ruthlessness of a packet of cotton buds

Cant see any easier games on the horizon so it's going to be another long season.

Massive momentum coming into the game, thousands looking for the rebirth of the blues etc and you could almost see the momentum deflating with every tigers goal.

Shattered, gutted and sick of taking calls from relatives, mates etc that barrack for Richmond. My kids dont beleive me anymore when I tell them we are going to get better. They say dad, you've been saying that for years and they havent got better yet. Sums it all up!!!

Unfortunately, PR machine aside the carlton of the last quarter and a half was the same lackluster rubbish I've been watching for the last 5 years. I hope Ratts can pull something out of his hat.

Pros:
Great to have the footy back again!
Good first 45 minutes. Some really nice ball movement and finishing.
Saw some positive signs from most of our developing talent. Bodes well for the future.
Nice to see some goals coming from our smaller, running players. We’ve struggled in this area for a while.
Murphy was terrific.
Thornton was really good.
Edwards impressed me.
Really enjoyed the skilful disposal of Stevens back in the team. Likewise enjoyed seeing Houlihan distributing the ball in the middle of the ground and forward.
Judd. Beautiful player. Look forward to when he’s at full fitness. Looked really dangerous when up forward.
Hadley was good in the clinches. Has good skill level too.
Fev worked hard, particularly early in the game.
Enjoyed seeing Scotland getting forward. With our dearth of small forwards, and with his skill level, he’s a pretty dangerous option forward of the ball.
Good to see Betts getting on the scorecard again.
Setanta looked dangerous on the lead out of the forward line.
Waitey, as usual, did some things that took my breath away. May not ever have the consistency to ever become a champion. But I love watching him play.

Cons:
Struggled to score after the first 45 minutes.
Tackling needs to get better.
I love the way Carrazzo plays. And we all know he’s not a great kick. But some costly turnovers in the first half.
I love that Gibbs is getting decent midfield time. Just like to see him get more of the ball.
Richo kicking 5.2. How often is that going to happen?
Inconsistency over hands in the back. Richo got a soft one, and also got away with one. 2 goal benefit. Fev doesn’t get a great run with the umps. Should have received 2 hands in the back decisions in the second half.

Gibbs has already shown plenty towards the end of last year and this pre-season. What do you expect from a 19 year old? 30 possesions a game? 3 goals? Brownlow votes? he had 15 posesions, a few clearances, was clean when he had it and looked far more comfortable than last season, not to mention he was on and off the bench.

and i agree with you on this one, too, mrs caz and grrf. Gibbs will be gun. he made one or two errors on sat night but will learn and the difference is that he won't make those mistakes again.

what was more disappointing were the bad mistakes made by the much more experienced players - eg stevens holding on to the ball far too long running down the wing, when he had fev 1-out in the goal square and edwards in 40m of space inside 50.

btw gibbs showed a lot more than deledio, who by rod waddell's reckoning ought be champ by now... gibbs hasn't missed 1 game since being drafted and has only had one pre-season. improving every time i see him.
