Agree there synbad. i want Essendon* and cwood to get away from pp territory. The future of carlton is in our under 25 brigade and very few of them look to be more than good honest triers. It's going to be a long way back. we will blame draft pick losses, but our problem at the mo goes back before then. Getting liitle from our heavy investment in 2000, swapping early picks from McK in 2001, ditto our disastrous trading and draftin decisions in the late 90s. We lack talent and that's not an easy problem to fix.
Yes I'd agree with you there Gerry, I think our problems do go further back than 2002. If you look at our draft history from 1998 to 2002, this is really what we're paying for. The draft penalties just mean that the agony is extended a couple more seasons. If you look at the current performers at other clubs (especially under 25's) you'll see most of them arrived at their clubs or were drafted in the period 1998-2001. If you look at what this club drafted during this time it doesn't make pleasant reading by comparison. I'm not sure we were right to cut Blake Campbell when we did as he was drafted in 2000 (same as Wiggins, Sporn, Livingston, Bannister and McGrath), and we've given a lot more time to these players than we gave Blake. Perhaps he didn't have the application but from what I saw last year at the Bullants when he did get out on the ground he probably wouldn't have been any worse than what we've got right now. Still someone had to go off the list and long term we may well benefit more from the likes of Harlett, Raso and Russell but it'll be 3-4 seasons from now when they really stand up for us.
If only we'd taken our drafting more seriously in 1998-2002
