And those jumpers he used to wear, they looked like someone had bought up the days takings on a sheep and they used its fleece for the wool.

I know Darryl Somers was (and still is) a fan of that particular line of fashion :-D

As a poster on CSC, I often talked about the shock
of seeing the discipline inflicted on Carlton
by Barassi at training.

No one was safe....Nicholls, Crosswell and Jezza
....it didn't matter who you were...
you did what you were told or asked to do
....or suffer the consequences.

I never missed a training night or session,
and quite often I'd be 10 minutes late arriving;
and I'd see Gary Crane doing laps or whatever;
and I'd ask the "Unofficial Match Committee"
(which we were)...."What did Gazza do wrong?"
....."He kicked with his normal foot/side"...."Oh"
I'd say; knowing how Barass wanted players
to be as proficient on their "Wrong side" as their "Right".

Whatever happened out there....afterwards;
he'd be in the rooms fiercely competing at
table tennis with Jezza or whoever with
people like Peter Landy barracking....
they were great days....exciting days.

As someone who was "tired of football", it's not a bad effort to be heavily involved as either a coach or board member for a further 20 years. 8)

Hey Warby,

I'm loving these!

I'm just wondering if you have anything on hand about the great Board Room tussles of the late 1970's and early 1980's? Might just help show the youngsters around here that things haven't always been perfect off-field for the Blues!

Anyway, good work :-D

Thanks mate....yes I have....trouble is time to find them....I do recall I've got a full page of one of the papers at least covering that very subject....then I've got to work out how to scan say a full page of the Age. etc etc.

I have found a shortened account I'll put up ASAP.

Harry "Soapy" Vallence...1926-38:204 games:722 goals.

Not sure whether I've told this story on this site or not,
but anyway; it bears telling.

In the 1980's we bought a house in Caulfield,
and it wasn't long before I started drinking
in the local Pub....The London Tavern.

There; I gravitated to a group of drinkers who met
there every night to have a few.

The group included a Rails Bookmaker, Caulfield
Trainers; a Solicitor and an Accountant; a Bank
Manager,Teachers; a Plumber...a real good mix.

On a few occasions; a tall thin elderly gent would
come in to enjoy a few pots, and was always warmly
welcomed by the older group members.

This gent was the "Lollipop Man" on the Local Primary
School crossing.

One night; I was told "Hey....you should meet him;
he used to play for Carlton"...I said "What's his name?"

"Soapy Vallence" they said; and introduced him to me.

What an absolute gentleman he was, with the typical
manners and politeness of his era showing through.

We had many a night together, Soapy and I, talking
about our beloved Blues...and a few tall stories as well!

My favourite story of his was about a game against
Fitzroy at the old Brunswick St. Oval in heavy fog.

He said that we were 5 points down in the dying minutes
of the game, when he took a mark "on the wing somewhere
around the middle of the ground"....when the final bell rang.

That meant he had to kick a goal for us to win the game,
and he asked the Umpire..."Where's our goal....which way?"
because of the fog.

He said he went back and kicked "An almighty torpedo" in
that direction; and a Policeman on horseback led them
back to the rooms.

He said that nobody knew who had won until they all read
The Sporting Globe that night to find out that his punt had
goaled from "about 100 yds out" to win Carlton the game.

Soapy....I'm proud to have known you; and I bet you're still
kicking torpedoes in the great footy field up in the sky.

Warby there was a story about either Horrie Clover or Soapy Vallence (I'm not sure - possibly is not either of them  ).

One of them used to work at Carlton & United Breweries and Jock McHale was their foreman and he would never give them the Saturday Morning off when Carlton and Collingwood played - which meant when they knocked off work at around 12 on a Saturday they would have to rush to the ground to play.

Yes mate....I've heard that story too; and after a quick look at both of their biographies; I don't think it's either of them.

I've got a feeling the story was originally told about the young Jack Dyer before he became a Policeman; and then bought his famous Milk Bar on the Church Street Hill in Richmond.

the mikes were switched off after that year!

Deany also made an arse of himself at the medal presentation following the 1995 Grand Final as well - after getting his medal from Bob Davis he tried to leap over the safety rail on the dias and tripped and landed flat on his face - so he was actually Mister Reliable he was 2 for 2 on Grand Final Medal Presentations.

Well mate....I've found an article amongst my stuff all about that classic...with pics!

I'll put it up as soon as I get a chance; hopefully today.

Malcolm Blight summarised it well in a line from his special comments in that game: "Look at the want in the eyes".

Peter Dean had "THE WANT" in spades during that game - we were never going to lose. 8)

Who will ever forget the week before the 1995 Grand Final and the saga of Fraser Brown's strained ankle ligaments?.....will he make the team?

Dog spent the week in a Hyperbaric (decompression) chamber at Epworth Hospital in a desperate battle to be passed fit to play.

There were some silly pictures of Browny looking like an escapee from the Space Shuttle - whilst he was in that Hyperbaric Chamber.
