I read TC post match posts, and just listened to Scott's presser to see how he denigrated our win.

He didn't make too much of a fuss of anything, it was the journos who wouldn't stop the carry on.

I thought he repetitively praised our midfield and our contested game.

Riley struggling a bit vs Rhys Stanley in the VFL at the moment. Will be interesting to see how he battles it out with an AFL standard ruck.

Agree

Riley looks good but needs to hit the gym. Stanley has 10 years on Riley.

I watched the preseason game against Cats which we won playing Vossy's new game plan.

I saw it again last night. The 45 degree passes. The run and carry. More handball and less bombing.

I dont know what happened, but it all came together in Vossy's last game, when we smashed reigning Premiers in the 2nd half, and haven't looked back since.

I went to that pre-season game, didn't think Cats were really trying and didn't think we looked that convincing with the win. Yes, clearly an attempt to possess it more and move the ball less predictably.

This game was almost finals like in pressure acts — from both sides. Our forward entry was way, way better last night than preseason game, even if inaccuracy in front of goal nearly killed us. the last kick inside F50 was still bombing it in in that pre-season game, especially the second half. I recall Cripps standing 10 m out of the goal square waving to someone on the true wing asking him to kick it to him, was laughable. No movement from our forwards in the second half of that pre-season game.

last night it seemed like only certain players were allowed to kick long F50 entries, FKP like Gov, H, etc. the rest of them looked for the angles and the shorter options, or it was just a case of our mids and small forwards running it inside which happened quite a lot.

Pittonet beat his opponent (a 22yo kid) in the ruck. 10 v 5 HO to advantage.
4 weeks ago, when Draper tired in the 2nd half, Pitto started winning the Ho and our mids enjoyed the service.
Last 3 games we've won, we have won the ruck ( albeit inferior rucks to Pitto/Harry).
Its not about winning or losing, but at the very least nullifying the opposition to give our mids an even chance.

We are kings of the contest in that situation.
Last night our midfield group Cripps Hewett Walsh Smith Ainsworth beat the Cats.
Bailey was amazing, but he is amazing and in rare form. Hottest player in the league, but defensively our mids were very good.
Acres strength over the ball was a treat. He has the body and run to push over the big Cats bodies.
Acres and cerra on wings were great. They provided plenty of support and connection with the defenders.

Our senior players were again fantastic and led from the front:

Weitering/ Haynes/ Newman/ Florent;
Crippa/ Hewett/ Walsh;
Cerra/ Acres;
McKay/ Hayward/ Ainsworth/ McGovern

But what about our quality kids, FMD.

Cowan/Dean/ Ison/ Smith/ Wilson

And the endeavour and cameos of

Evans/ Young/ Byrne

Team effort.
Williams Lord Young Derksen need to knock harder.
No change for next week.

I think you missed my point. Perhaps I was a bit too subtle.

Game style and things we were trying in preseason game under Voss, showed up last night, for 4th week in a row imo (incl 2nd half of Brizzy game)
The first half of the preseason game vs Cats and in the preseason game vs Brisbane we lowered our eyes, honoured leads, ran in 2's and 3's, showed more dare, hit up targets.
The 2nd half bombing in preseason game reared its head in the H&A season.

Both teams last night were better than the teams that played in the preseason.
I posted the team that played in Pre game discussion thread.
11 players from preseason game didn't play last night.

I absolutely agree with your last dentence.
Maybe like Fraser was honest when he said the foundations were laid by Vossy, and the team is evolving. Hayward said players are understanding the game plan better. Whatever it is that has happened, its a huge improvement, and imo it started in the 2nd half of the Brizzy game, 4 weeks ago.

Or, like Crusader suggests, this team plays better when there's no pressure going on between their ears.

Oh yeah, and the crowd size and noise was noticeably different between preseason game and last nights game at the G.

Are you sure it was Voss who told them to stop playing with dare when the pressure is on or the players just tightened up all by themselves?

is it just me or are the guys playing much more uninhibited. we suddenly seem a lot more extroverted too?

obviously much of the voss footprint is here. but the players seem a helluva lot more relaxed. we also are drawing much different lines in our kicking. lots of those 45º kicks, espesh into the F50. kick in towards the corridor, than out, then back central as we enter F50. zig zagging through the field, rather than straight line bombing it.

its all made possible by the emphasis of two things. handball chains out of hot zones, so by the time we are kicking the ball, there pressure isn't as hot. and our dare. looks like we've been given the green light to turn it over, as long as we're being aggressive about our ball use.

with voss, i always felt like we'd try to play with dare. make a few mistakes and concede turnover goals ... and then the instructions would come out to look after the ball. ie we never persisted with that way for long. with fraser, he's letting them go. same goes when we would have a lead. "look after the ball" and inevitably we'd turn it over bcos guys were too scared to move.

that one turover with 5 mins left when we had the lead. straight up the guts from kick out. we'd have never seen that in the final qtr if we had the lead under voss. but with fraser, we'll see it with less than 5 to go. knowing we need another score if we want to win. he who dares, etc

we will live and die by that sword. and i love that.

A lot more run and dare, uncontested footy.
Less trying to defend leads and just playing a more balanced game.
Foward 50 entries less bombing.
Less defending area and more one on one defence.

Ps. Last half vs Brisbane when Voss gave the reigns over to his assistance and he sat down in the bunker was the change. He knew then and so did GW.

Gotta laugh and admire the club’s PR training when they ask the players and Fraser about Voss. Don’t be so gullible please to take the admiration at face value. He was a deadweight and took this club to the brink.

Oh and that’s 3 in a row now with the orange socks

The Henry goal was eerily similar to the kosi Pickett one

But also, Hewett-Newman-Mcgovern-Cripps had a bit of Weiters-Hollands-Doc-Acres

You reckon any prospective coach thinking about putting there hat into the ring would want to coach a side that has only bad things to say about the out going coach??

You find ii odd that nobody at the club when praising Voss mentions his coaching abilities and tactical nouse.
All you hear is how good he was at being a leader of men and a mentor to the players???

Do you really think that anyone at the club would openly bag an outgoing coach.
Have a listen to Docherty on 3aw who is the only person in the media willing to call out Voss and his coaching ability..

Do you feel there is a problem with the delivery? What do you think would be advantageous doing it any other way?
