Just watched the replay.
I have been criticqal of the gameplan over the past two months because we haven't been playing rn and carry football. Yesterday they did for three and a half quarters. We had players forward of the ball and so Bukley and Simpson in particular were able to run with confidence. It makes a lot of difference as well when players are running defensively and carryingthe football through the half back line instead of chipping it sideways, waiting for the forwards to set up. Finally, Buckley, whose instinct is to run, was able to inject himself into the game whereas with the chip and mark game, he is stifled. he has always been quick but he hasn's been allowed to play to his strengths. Boekhurst would probably have played well in that environment yesterday as well. He is a good user of the ball when he gets it and can make space.
it was nice of Gibbs to turn up yesterday for one of his better games.
Credit to Kreuzer who held his own against Gawn. Gawn is not a run and jump ruckman and it suits Kreuzer to push and shove. He and Phillips did well between them. We need topersevere with Phillips, who will develop into a very good player. Some of his taps yesterday were first class and that mark and goal in the last was a beauty.
Blue hat, I noticed you wrote that we can't run and carry because we dont have players in front of the ball last week and now backed it up again this week.
In my opinion we should run and carry because we don't have players in front of the ball. That is the name of the game. Push back and then run hard with it. Sharing it around.
It has been a problem for the last month that we were lazy and bombing down the line to casboult instead of taking the game on. Last week in the second half we changed that and started handpassing and running. Hopefully told by the coaches that if they stuff it up this way they will forgive them rather than than dumping the ball every chance we could get. Yesterday in the first half we ran every chance. Simmo let us down a few times early with dump kicks but he fixed it up as the game went on.
Gibbs and Krooze also eliminated the random kick out of stoppage that usually ends up killing us. Instead choosing to at least attempt to get a handpass chain going. All this was for the better.
From what I saw sitting up high in the stands was that our run and carry had nothing to do with having players ahead of the ball. In fact in this regard I noticed little different than previous weeks.
The run and dare and courage to take the game on was great to watch and it all but eliminated the need to have Casboult pushing up around the wing apart from having him as a decoy as oppo scouts would know we are often lazy and dump it to him.
So if you see us running the ball out of the back fifty with hand passes early coupled with lowering the eyes when going inside 50 then you know we are going to be competitive.
If you see us dumping the ball out of our defensive 50 and also into our own fifty then we are in for a long day.
