Give it a break. The club followed a process, which is what most wanted. The process spat out trigg. You would have needed to be part of that process to critically analyse it. Samantha Lane's piece is inane. There are 10 melbourne clubs that have been commodified by the afl. Carlton is not Robinson Crusoe there. Winning is what builds identity. See Hawthorn. Barely a suburb and it's sustained success that has created their identity.

We should have tried to poach Maddy Pulver's dad from the ARU

Lets face it, an AFL CEO's position is WELL down the list of successful CEO's dream jobs.

The salary is a piss in the ocean to what they would otherwise get and the role is so sedate that most would be bored out of their brains by seasons end.

I know that I wouldn't want the role if given the offer, like many I love the thrill of a challenge and don't like the idea of being told what I can and can't do by the AFL

That is the reason that most AFL clubs CEO's play ring-a-ring-a-rosey from club to club.

Great point Steve. All of them are now AFL puppets.
AFL approved products that cannot say or do anything outside of AFL approval.

That doesn't just apply to the CEO's...it applies to the 18 clubs as a whole. That's the way it works...they're licence holders.

and the sooner we accept that the better. for nearly 20 years we have been trying to do things differently or not following the system and look where that has got us.

I think our fallen status is more to do with our own gross mismanagement and waste.

If you want to know what it feels like for the club to stand for something, read this. If you think the club stands for nothing now you are short selling the club's history.

Those of you who remember that wonderful day in 1970 will enjoy reading an article written 25 years later the year we won our last GF.

Those of you too young to remember the glory days, they will come. But don't think that because we are sitting 13th and haven't won a flag for more than two decades that our club doesn't stand for something.

The reason everybody revelled in our demise following the salary cap breaches was because we DID stand for something and the reason we are revelling in Essendon*'s demise is because they stand for something.

The reason we hate Collingwood is because they stand for something and the reason we hate Richmond is because they stand for something.

Being universally hated is a badge you wear. Collingwood marketing came up with a beauty. "You hate us because you ain't us". It isn't true but it shows that they LIKE being hated. So should we.

Those 16 cups in the foyer at PP are what we stand for, not the two wooden spoons. And the greatest of them all was won in September 1970 against the biggest enemy of all in front of the biggest crowd of all time.

That's why they hate us so much and that's why this article is so sweet.

An article from the Herald Sun, 24 Sep 2013 about an article in the Herald Sun, July 22 1995.

Read it and puff out your chest. 45 years later, Collingwood supporters still can't believe it and past Collingwood players are haunted by it. That's what this club stands for.

And look at the AFL team of the century ... representation on almost every line.

Despite the best recent attempts by Essendon* journalists to rewrite history the fact is that no club in the 20th century produced more champions and more flags than Carlton. The 21st centruy has been a disaster so far but we live in hope!

No problem believing we can be the first team to win most flags in 2 centuries.
Plenty of time for that to happen. All you need these days is AFL financial & strategic backing and you've got a great chance to be a top 4 side and win flags
