Rowe has to play back in the reserves?

MM's #1 man atm.

Just listen to that presser.

We have a better option?

A gun backman ready to take his place?

It just gets worse, now he's saying we lost a lot of players last year that we could have used tonight!! Apart from Betts, I'd love to know who he is talking about, surely not Laidler?

I've been saying this for the last 18 months, unfortunately we have nothing coming through on our list and will play some players who are only their until we can recruit through the draft over the next few years

unfortunately it looks like being a gradual phasing out of these plodders

that's what poor recruiting and development over three years can do to a team

starting Menzell as a sub was baffling, need to get as much game time into him as quickly possible, he at least looks like he has some class

and getting Daisy still leaves me non plussed

Hard night at the office for all concerned.

I've not lost hope losing to Collingwood with a good 3rd of our side injured. It was to be expected we'd struggle to stay in the game.

Dug deep in the last quarter to gain some respectability on the scoreboard, which at least saves us from a humiliating 80+ point belting.

Can you imagine the nightmare rotations would have been tonight? We SO desperately needed our better players for this game.

Would have loved to have seen both sides at full strength tonight, would have given us a real good look at how we are traveling compared to Collingwood.

Didn't blow out to a 80+ point thumping, so as horrible as the loss is, I'm at least pleased we didn't crumble into a heap like the Essendon***** game.

Not an unfair point to make but good sides have a structure which enables them to be successful with replacements. Ours was all over the place. Players were deer in headlights when moving forward as they weren't sure what to do.

Hesitate, tackled, turnover, goal.

Who is responsible for that at the club?

There are Malthouse defenders and haters on this site. I am neither but I do accept that he has not been at his best since being here. Also accept that the appointment of Wiley was probably a mistake and more about a confident for Mick than a coach with value. The appointment of Laidley should have off-set this.

Players can't escape the bake for lack of commitment though. At times they were really trying tonight (without results) but the lack of tackling pressure was not good enough. We cannot sustain effort. I hate to say it but we look unfit.

Yes, so many first efforts with no second efforts, even to present as a target and especially on the double back for extra defence.

The workrate through the middle third was nowhere near what was required to win the game.

Desire was there at times but the fitness levels failed us.

Operations aside, because all teams have them, we should still be able to keep up.

We don't even look strong.

Maybe he is talking about duigan....

MM said after the win against the dogs that "I don't know where this is coming from" referring to the renewed intensity, tackling etc from the players...

How on earth can a coach claim to be in the dark over the basics of a contact sport?

High work rate, and attention to the 1%ers, contested ball etc are just the basis of the game.

Our tackling was down tonight to 49, over the past 2 weeks we win the tackling count with 88 and 72 tackles.

Tackling is just one aspect of the game, but a very important basic element and good indicator of intensity and team ethic.

Have the players worked it out yet?

no doubt work rate is important, but we all need to face reality and understand that we simply have a shit list

no amount of workrate, 1%ers, improved fitness levels etc etc will mask our deficiencies

even the best coach in the AFL (ie Clarkson) would struggle with this list

we can only bide our time now and hope the club has finally learnt it's lessons and demonstrate some patience in building a premiership list and a better club

I've only seen the first half but I'd have to say that Rowe has been pretty good.

Is he putrid in the second half?

Pros:
Originally only saw the last 20 minutes, and it was quite enjoyable. Good we’re running out games.
White and Warnock.
Murphy coped with a heavy tag pretty well.
Not his best game, but Simmo is easily our most consistent player.
Casboult continues to impress. Same with Buckley and Bell.
Good to see Docherty get a go. Shows glimpses that he could be a good player.
Everitt was pretty good.
Robbo was reasonable again. Same with Rowe.
We appear to finally be learning to shepherd the guy on the mark.

Cons:
We’ve learnt to win at Etihad, but we’ve forgotten how to win at the MCG.
Some of the kicking out of defence was horrible.
I thought we were reasonably competitive. Just nowhere near as efficient, until it opened up in the last quarter.
Like that we’re flipping the ball round more at the moment. Just couldn’t cope with the Collingwood pressure. Out-pressured. Out-tackled. Only 49 tackles after 90 plus the last 2 weeks.
Umpiring in front of goals was pretty diabolical. Soft goal to Witts immediately after Hendo has been strangled by Frost. Hendo gets jumper pulled in marking contest again in the second quarter for no free. Absolute charity goal to Beams just before half time. Cloke gets held in the marking contest by Rowe. He gets the deserved free kick goal, unlike Hendo.
Menzel as sub again. They must be really worried about his ability to run out a game.
Garlett and McLean. I assume they’re worried about him being exposed in midfield, but I really don’t like it when McLean plays deep forward. If he can’t play midfield, don’t play him at all. Going to find it hard to stop defensive rebound with Robbo and McLean as our ‘small’ forwards.
Thomas. Nice player. Good skills. But he’s lost his zip and he can’t kick over a jam tin at the moment.
Our depth is stretched pretty thin at the moment. Especially against the better teams.
