I feel for Murph. I hope he and the club realise the captaincy call was a mistake. The CFC of the last decade will follow up the mistake by not doing anything.

Didn't see the game as I am currently in holiday in Bali. However I did a little fist pump when I got back to the villa and saw the score. This was a real danger game for us and always a possibility that we would shoot ourselves in the foot. I can understand that some might feel disappointed in the manner of the win but I don't really feel that we are a team that has the right to expect any easy win in this competition let alone be disappointed with a 43 point margin in an interstate away game.

Pros:

Hard working win. Could or should have been a 10-15 goal win.
Midfield were terrific. Kreuzer and McLean led the way.
I thought our defensive set ups were much smarter in the 2nd half. Actually kept a few back in there for the odd occasion when the ball ventured to that end.
Hendo has been terrific up forward the last 3 weeks. The latest injury to Waite has probably turned out well for us, in forcing us to shift him forward. Hard to imagine that he'll play much defence over the next 5 years.
Great to see Betts back to his creative best.
Simmo will go close to winning the best and fairest.
Great to have Robbo back in the side. Winning centre clearances. Showing real physical aggression. Loved what he did to Ablett.
And speaking of Ablett. Great game from Curnow again.

Cons:

Goalkicking kept the opposition in the game again.
Umpiring in the first half was horrible.
Rowe was poor.
Unlike others, I'm a real fan. But Jamo made some bad mistakes.
Gibbs did some nice things, but has been disappointing since his injury. Even back in his familiar defensive role, I thought he conceded too much easy ball to his opponent.

You are not serious are you? Should not be in the team on present form. Carrots should be kicking the leather tomorrow to improve his decision making and disposal of the ball.

Watson is developing and Kruezer's tap work was the best I've seen from him, ever! Keep that up Krooz.
Can't wait to see Waite & Henderson forward with the 3 smalls!!!!

Agree with those points.

Actually happy with the 4 points. There is a difference between happiness and being delusional. If we keep on protecting out of form senior players like Carrots we will never develop the right culture. The question remains as to whether Malthouse has got the balls to send a strong statement.

We actually do pretty well interstate. Good game by Curnow, who's found his niche as the all day run with player - may have saved his bacon. Robbo lacks polish and frustrates but has a crack. Gibbs ok, but he really just can't seem to have any "big" games that you expect every now and then from no. 1 draft picks ? (in my book he's about an 8 to 15 draft pick and don't think he'll ever be any better).

Rowe had a poor one, and even his marking, which is usually his strength, was off. His big negative is lack of recovery (ala old Fish ?) and so he probably won't make it. Kruez dominated the ruck but should have against that opposition. Amigos went "ok" and maybe on the verge of a big one against Freo....Eduardo showed glimpses after a mare of a season so far.

A win is a win.

I'm happy we won, I simply watched the game, and I see a mid-table team doing their best. Our list is probably bottom 6 on talent, it's just that our good players are mature, but some of those are about to fall off the perch.

Maybe it's watching Gold Coast, and knowing that their players clearly outstrip ours in talent, and will pass us in output soon enough...

GC has more talent than most teams, and after watching GWS for 3 quarters today they ain't far behind. Just what the AFL wanted though.

Slowly building for September ...

Gibbs hardly seen, Carrots far from his best, Judd not dominant, Murphy missing ...all in all its mostly players I been reading about where people were saying too old, too slow, he's a dud, get rid of him and so on, that have been doing the work and getting us over the line.

If our best come into some form heading into the business end of the season - look out! Anything can happen.

I dare say that's why our wins have looked unpolished, scruffy affairs, our best players have been pretty much missing, yet we are still winning :)

If we can win games without the likes of Judd, Murphy, Carrots and co dominating, a forward line that is far from its functioning best, things ain't as bad as they may appear on the surface.

I'm actually starting to get a little excited about September. It doesn't take much for things to click into place ...

Malthouse is a smart coach.

That's a good optimistic post.....I agree.....and soldiers like Armfield and Curnow and Tuohy are filling in for the ''stars'' of the team to get us over the line....bring it on!

I identify with your mood Aramari, as I'm sure many here do.

When we bottomed out in the dark years, there was only one way forward, up. The number ones, then the great man, and the steady rise had us believing the "they know we're coming" slogan. At the end of 2011 we expected top 4 in 2012, but explained away the fall on the basis of injuries and a poor coach. But you reminded me in a very telling post of yours a year or so ago that there is not an inevitable progression from cellar dwellers to premiers and then to a rebuild again in a predictable cycle. Hope has come crashing down this year, reality has struck, just watching Juddy, very good as he still is, makes it all the more obvious and painful. We are ordinary and there is no flag in sight in the foreseeable future. Disappointing is an understatement. The contrast with the bright hope of GC is striking.

I'm trying to live in the moment and enjoy the win today, buoyed by the train wreck that is Essendon*.

Nothing great about this performance other than getting the four points.

I can see why MM wants us to play wide ... we can't kick ... too many of our plays hang the ball too high and also very few can kick to advantage ... our short kicking is poor.

Too many of our players fall over in marking contest.

Could lip read MM when he gave Mitch a spray ... told him to get to the ball first.

I thought it was good to see Murph at least get a bit more of the ball today. Slowly he will find his mojo.

If you are happy to just make the eight then you will be thrilled by today.

Some of you just don't understand that if our foot and hand skills, decision making and tackling is off against teams like this, then you can forget getting those areas right against the top four teams.
