Personally I think the thing that keeps Mick up at night is the realization our tough players lack skill and our skilled players lack toughness
Not sure he can change either of these things
This is a product of recruitment
If that means a rebuild then so be it
This is the main reason we hired Malthouse.
If he can't coach these types of players then he shouldn't coach at all.
Anybody can coach a complete team.
Geez I don't know if it is fair to expect Mick to be able to turn most of the soft tops into hard hats. He did had success with Thomas but by and large I think some players will forever be soft tops.
He can coach them on how to play the game however.
Sugar teaching them how to play the game comes in more facets than just education of the game.
A coach should educate, but also and instil discipline, perseverance, courage, pride, self awareness and belief just to name a few characteristics that they need to be successful, especially at the highest grade.
The mentality of the game is just as important as the physicality and knowledge of it which are entwined at the most part of each player’s ability and strength. The more pride they have and the more they hate losing the more competitive and physical they become.
You need every type of player in any given team, the challenge is to mould and sculpt those players into a balanced, hungry, secure and successful team.
That’s a good coach.
