But I'm not sure how this works. Ratten was as honest and blue collar and grunty a footballer as you can get, yet as coach he created a team of soft, flakey downhill skiers who shat themselves every time the spotlight was put onto them.

Did you see our finals match against West Coast in 2011 John?
We had the hardest road trip in the game with less than our full complement of players and missed a prelim by less than a kick.
Yes we had a poor year in 2012 which correlated with our injuries IMO but to suggest the players shat themselves every time the spolight was put onto them is wrong IMO.

I stand corrected. Should've said 'almost every time'.

I just don't buy this idea that teams play in a mirror-image of the way their coach played.

I agree that players dont play in the mirror image of their coaches but your ascertain that we shat ourselves when under the spotlight is completely misguided IMO.
The spotlight is applied at its greatest when you are playing the best with the most at stake. Thats finals football.
No one could possibly say we havent given everything when competing in finals.
In 2011, we obliterated Essendon* and played a sensational game against the Eagles. Our effort in 2010 against the Swans was full of merit as well.

If we want to be critical of Ratten, thats fine but lets be fair about it. To suggest he " created a team of soft, flakey downhill skiers who shat themselves every time the spotlight was put onto them" cannot be justified IMHO.

..^^^..

..agreed, we played our best football in the finals.. ..no doubt about that one, and i agree that's the highest pressure games.. ..but other times we crumbled, not winning more than 3 games in a row when we should have been capable over the years just wasn't good enough and implied lack of mental toughness/discipline over consecutive weeks.. ..it's simple, if you can't win more than 3 games in a row you're hardly ever gonna finish top 4, and if you don't finish top 4, you're not miraculously going to break that 3 wins barrier during finals, and as you know bottom half of the top 8 requires 4 straight wins for flag..

I'm always willing to give everyone a chance and see how they stack up. Good luck Brad

Exactly.

He had terrific qualities at Melbourne on and off the field and played near 250 game.

I will wait and see before passing judgement rather than just knock him because his name doesn't have the profile of others.

What are his strengths that make him a suitable coach??
Ling, Black, Bolton, Mcleod all say no, we end up with Brad Green

he said yes. and, yeah, he comes from the great culture of Melbourne.

The culture that beat us to the GF in 2000 thanks to brad green? We aren't much better than Melbourne by the way, short memories.

Give the bloke a chance.

yep, that's kind of my point. we need to lift. we need to learn new good stuff.
I've never liked or admired this guy. i know I'm being short sighted though, and he does deserve a chance. Right now, it feels like hacksville to me. Our midfield are good enough o succeed anyway though. (I apologise for my negativity. )

At least give the bloke 1/2 a week before you hang him!

The club has announced that, having reviewed Brad's performance as Carlton's Midfield Dev coach, Brad will be executed at 2.45 on Thursday.

This time is subject to change without notice and the CFC recommends members arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Finally, something to get excited about. :yikes:

Are the Hawks soft?

FIGJAM was more outside than in and under like Hayes. And neither was Mcleod.

I guess it's completely rational to assume that Brad Green is going to override Malthouse and stamp his mark on the club.

Great arguments.

Ah yep, Kouta with his one obscure example paraded as "argument over". Of course.

Find me an "outside" player that has lead a team to a premiership. I don't think there has been one in the history of the game.

Adding a bloke who was (keyword: was) the captain of the biggest on-field debacle since...well, us. He was sacked as captain after a year, mostly for mirroring the qualities that we all come on here and piss and moan about our side for the past 12 months.

Happy to stand corrected if and when he does make a contribution to the club. I just think panicking and picking him, virtually by default, sends a bad message to the playing list who are already full of bad habits that he built a career on.

but Brad will not be our head coach, but assistant coach - so what you should ask is - show me premiership teams who have had outside assistant coaches - I'll bet there's been a few.

name me an outside player that has led a team to a premiership?
well then, name me a player that has a surname green, that has been a coach of a football club?
name me a left foot footballer that has been a successful coach?
....so what?

how do you know the club panicked and picked by default? or was it you that was panicking by default?

I know Brad Green, and if nothing else the club will benefit from his absolute professionalism....one of the best prepared footballers of his time.

Bright, articulate and fresh from the game. Worth a punt given the experience around him in MM and Rob Wiley.

I may be unfairly critical, but I remember a team that lost finals to Brisbane, Sydney and West Coast in winnable games. Yes, we smashed Essendon*, who didn't bring a finals game at all... They were 2 games shy of 7th and quite frankly didn't belong. that's 1 from 4. I also remember a team that got up for the big games, but consistently crumbled when they needed to consolidate their good work by beating teams they probably should have in mid season.

In short, my recollection of Ratten's team was of one that was unreliable and fragile - the opposite of Ratten as a player. Honestly BV, did you go to the footy any time in the last 4 years confident that Carlton would grind out a solid, professional win? Personally, I had no idea what I was going to get... Boiled lollies or chocolates.

More astonishing is how we seem to know everything about Brad the person and Brad the new coach.

Green's job isn't to coach what is already an integral part of a players armoury, but to follow through with Malthouse's wishes.
Have a feeling he'll be able interpret Malthouse's orders and follow through with them.

All this speculation about how Brad Green will go is complete nonsense.
Give the guy an opportunity. Who's to say he doesn't have a good tactical brain given that he's playesd soccer as well
Who the flower knows? None of us that's who.
I'm happy to give him a go.
Libba and Rob Harvey were Brownlow medallists. How did they go as assistant coaches?
Ken Judge was an outside lair. wasn't a bad assistant coach
Paul Roos avoided physical contact throughout his footy career and played for Fitzroy...turned out OK as a coach
FFS, he's at Carlton now. Until we see evidence otherwise, give the guy some support

I would have thought 1 of his keys roles would be to get around and talk/mentor/encourage/support those on our list from years 0-4. He is some youth to go with our youth and he is 2 months out of the game. Surely that's not to hard to understand.

So he wasn't 1st choice. Some of those other choices said thanks but I have a good gig in the media, some said yes then shafted us days later and some said sorry but it doesn't suit my family at this time. Such is life.

There are obviously many knowledgeable, well read, close friends of Brad currently posting on TC about his supposed deficiencies. Lets be honestly here; I doubt those same posters would know him if they fell over him in the Street.

I doubt the Clubs 18-22yr old's would know much about him other than he has Captained an AFL team, played 250+ AFL games, played for Australia and that MM wanted him in a Coaching/Development role.

How many assistant Coaches that started under MM have carried on to Coach AFL teams and/or now hold lofty positions in the AFL? If MM can mold players I suspect he would have a fair influence on budding new Coaches.

Boo!!! Hang him.
Besides, he makes very poor choices at the cafe counter.
See...I know all the important stuff about him.

I was kinda impressed with his media efforts at Melbourne last year. He was the one to do the heavy lifting after the scully defection and was rolled out at pressers when things were tough. Has an air of leadership about him. Reckon I'll give him a chance...

Most sensible post in this whole topic. If mick and rob Wiley think he has what it takes, that is good enough for me.
