We are more than capable of a good scrap when we feel we are playing an opposition we are not expected to stroll to victory against.

Complacency/maturity/consistency of effort is our biggest problem at the moment. I don't think we need a reinvention of the game plan, more tweaking to combat some new things being thrown at us.

I think the whole beat up about us after the Collingwood game didn't help us one bit, but that is our problem, shouldn't start playing like millionaires because of it.

I actually think the fact everyone has seemed to not rate Essendon* as highly has helped them stay focused and grounded. Be interesting to see how they go this week as they are now being talked up as a legitimate top side.

People say media/public expectation makes no difference, but you have a bunch of young guys who hear everything, its definitely going to have an impact. We just have to become more mature to ignore it and stick to the fundamentals.

Well said.

Yeah, I'm with you too

I would like to agree also. But how many chances do we need need to disprove this? It is hardly a new issue.

My other concern is the players mentality. In all honesty, what right have they got to be complacent? What have this group really achieved?

They have the talent and the opportunity to achieve some big things. Even this season. But I have concerns about their mental maturity and determination to truly become elite.

I said earlier this week that I hope internally they realize they currently are not as good as they think they are. Change this mindset and be prepared to do the hard yards and get their hands dirty.

Sunday will tell us a lot about our player group and chances this year IMHO.
Exactly, we get complacent without any real reason to be. It's not an excuse, it shouldn't be happening.

We need to be prepared to do the hard yards. The side has proven they can do it, they just need to do it more consistently.

Biggest problem I see with our coach(s) is that they're reactive

They try to copy the successful teams of the previous year... Collingwood's press, Geelong's fwd entries etc.

Meanwhile the proactive coaches are are looking at ways to beat these successful game plans

Just when we get our press happening, guess what? It's been nullified by others and we're behind the game again...

Its pretty obvious that we rely too much on clean ball. When we do get harassed with the ball and without a genuine Plan B, it then means we kick it long and hope someone takes a big mark. Ordinarily, at times this can be a good ploy. Problem is, we don't have anyone who can take a big contested mark (ala Cloke) or even provide a genuine target to free up some other players. We are caught in no man's land. The amount of times Adelaide ran out of our forward half with ridiculous ease was embarrassing. Lacking key forwards was always going to be a big problem and unfortunately its coming home to roost. In my mind relying on Waite as our key forward was always going to be a problem. Replacing Fevola has proved to be more difficult than first thought.

Thank god for that!

I would love to know what we tried this time that we didnt try the last 4 weeks.
You can see the players trying to lift ... Juddy was flying for speccies.
Alas.. the gameplan was the same and those Larry Holmes left jabs just kept hitting us on the jaw.

I agree. That was probably the most concerning thing about yesterday. The players looked well and truly 'up for it' (to quote the coach). But once Adelaide ground their way on top, any belief we had seemed to vanish away pretty quickly. We'll probably win enough games to scrape into the 8, but hard to see a lot of hope, when it appears that the players and the MC don't know what to do now that our preferred gamestyle has been unlocked.
