We are on our knees right now. I'm not sure how we will field a competitive team this year!

73 GF for the reasons outlined above.

93 GF. I was playing rugby in Ireland at the time and didn't know who won for a few days Got the result and on the plane home I was in a bulkhead seat and they had the big screen about a metre in front of my face with the replay.

Last year against Geelong. That hurt. But it also showed we are up there on our day.

The loss in Round 3 or 4 to Essendon* a couple of years back really set our season on its heels. We had a reasonable draw and had been looking at something like 4-0 for the start of the year but losing that Essendon* game cost us momentum and IIR, we lost a couple of others early and ended up something like 1-4. I remember the Essendon* game because it was my wife's first time at the MCG with the big crowd.

My first ever live game. Vs Geelong at Geelong in the mid sixties. We lost by a point after Benetti (I think) rushed a behind and the siren went. It was that day I realized I was a Carlton supporter and not just someone vaguely interested in the footy.

More likely to be Bill Bennett.........Bennetti was a backpocket.

Nah. Bennett didn't play in the mid 60s in losses to Geelong. Besides he was a key forward - wouldntve rushed any behinds. Benetti would've rushed hundreds.

2003 RD 22 - what added to that horrific day was Mick Martyn's lap of honour wearing a NM scraf even though he had been given 13 games in a Carlton jumper by Pagan to reach 300 at the expense of Glenn Manton & Luke Livingston.

1985 Elim Final was devastating - getting overrun by NM in 2nd half

2009 Elim Final - getting run over by the Lions and their smug coach Voss' reaction after. Little did we know that he was about to ruin his club for years

Losing our last game at Princes Park/Optus Oval in 2005 typified how shocking the years 2002-2007 really were. Couldn't even lift for that one!

How we just caved in on a regular basis under Pagan was devastating particularly given the half casts he brought into the club. Took longer to recover from his recruiting then the draft penalties themselves!

Any loss to Ess is devastating - however when Kernahan kicked it out on the full in the 1993 drawn game that felt gut wrenching due to the feral red & black response in the crowd.

He probably meant discards.

Or cast-offs. That's the way I read it.

When I lost my C3-PO and R2-D2 action figures in 1980 because a silly young boy (me) left them behind somewhere, and they were subsequently thrown out.

Shattered.

Yeah....whatever.

Benetti I think it was. He rushed it for the Cats when the scores were level, not us so if he played back.....

Anyone mention the Fog game at the Junction Oval St Kilda in 1971 against Fitzroy? Cost us the flag. If memory serves me correctly, we'd beaten the Hawks the week before at Glenferrie(not an easy task). We then played Fitzroy needing to win the game and then beat Collingwood in the last game of the year to make the finals. After the Dawks game we'd rediscovered our mojo from '70. Anyway, at half time the thickest fog I have ever seen descended on the ground and even though I was standing at the Fitroy Street end forward pocket, you could hardly see beyond the goal square. Bizarre. We lost and therefore missed the finals. My memory also is that we played the Pies at home the next week and they were well ahead at half time. They lost. 1970 was still haunting them.
ps: my memory might be flawed about all this as I spent a lot of time in pubs close to the Junction in the 80's.

Yes....a great post; and it reminds me of a similar story told me by the great Carlton Legend

Soapy Vallence, which I posted in ''Warby's Scrapbook'' a few years ago...it bears repeating.

Harry "Soapy" Vallence...1926-38:204 games:722 goals.

''Not sure whether I've told this story on this site or not,
but anyway; it bears telling.

In the 1980's we bought a house in Caulfield,
and it wasn't long before I started drinking
in the local Pub....The London Tavern.

There; I gravitated to a group of drinkers who met
there every night to have a few.

The group included a Rails Bookmaker, Caulfield
Trainers; a Solicitor and an Accountant; a Bank
Manager,Teachers; a Plumber...a real good mix.

On a few occasions; a tall thin elderly gent would
come in to enjoy a few pots, and was always warmly
welcomed by the older group members.

This gent was the "Lollipop Man" on the Local Primary
School crossing.

One night; I was told "Hey....you should meet him;
he used to play for Carlton"...I said "What's his name?"

"Soapy Vallence" they said; and introduced him to me.

What an absolute gentleman he was, with the typical
manners and politeness of his era showing through.

We had many a night together, Soapy and I, talking
about our beloved Blues...and a few tall stories as well!

My favourite story of his was about a game against
Fitzroy at the old Brunswick St. Oval in heavy fog.

He said that we were 5 points down in the dying minutes
of the game, when he took a mark "on the wing somewhere
around the middle of the ground"....when the final bell rang.

That meant he had to kick a goal for us to win the game,
and he asked the Umpire..."Where's our goal....which way?"
because of the fog.

The Umpie said ''I think it's that way'' and pointed down the ground somewhere.

He said he went back and kicked "An almighty torpedo" in
that direction; and a Policeman on horseback led them
back to the rooms.

He said that nobody knew who had won until they all read
''The Sporting Globe'' that night to find out that his punt had
goaled from "about 100 yds out" to win Carlton the game.

Soapy....I'm proud to have known you; and I bet you're still
kicking torpedoes in the great footy field up in the sky''
.

I now realise my Soapy Vallence ''replay'' wasn't about a ''loss''; but it followed on well from Eric Pascoe's post; and I thought it was a good story regardless.
