Probably time to update this, but like a lot of things at Carlton - there is some continuity with sponsors which means both parties are happy with what they're getting out of the respective deals. Can only be a good thing. I don't have anything on Visy's deal with Carlton. It did expire in December 2011 - but given the nature of Carlton's involvement with the Pratt family and Visy, and also the ongoing deal the company has with Chris Judd - one has to surmise that this deal has been extended for similar, if not the same monetary value.
The Optus renewal in September 2011 means they have been in the Carlton sponsorship mix for 20 years. As well as receiving branding on the club’s shorts, Optus leverages the sponsorship through a lot of business-to-business leveraging with the club’s coterie groups and other corporate functions. They also have naming rights to the club’s grand final lunch function.

* Based on ongoing three year deal.

Someone made mention on this site that 'Our sponsorship is full'. I don't necessarily subscribe to this notion. There's no better time to be canvasing sponsors than when you are well positioned on and off-field. There are creative ways to maximize sponsorship potential. Just because a logo isn't on the jumper or the building's HQ - doesn't mean potential sponsors shouldn't be given the red carpet treatment as well as current ones. Visy and Hyundai aren't going to be around forever.
In some people's eyes - I'd be going wayyyy down the wrong track with this next suggestion - but if you read the Financial Review like Chris Judd and I do, you'd know that Gazprom, the Russian Government owned (50.1%) energy giant, has recently opened an LNG marketing and trading desk in Singapore, and is seeking to build access to non-domestic sources; and are looking toward Austalia as a possible source of supply for its LNG trading operations.
Gazprom sponsors a number of teams across a range of sports in Russia and abroad, with Russian football champions Zenit Saint Petersburg among the beneficiaries. Their deal as sponsor of the German Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 pays up to €25 million a year. They've just extended that until 2017. When the company went into Serbia (for oil) in 2010, they decided to bail out financially ailing football club, Red Star. Up until then, Red Star couldn't buy a sponsor.
As a comparison, the Oil and gas exploration company, Woodside, has renewed its current three-year co-major sponsor deal with Fremantle for a further four years, taking the deal through to the end of 2016. It is worth $1.25 million per annum to the Dockers. Nice wad of cash. Is it a good fit for them? Maybe it is due to their location - but sponsorships don't necessarily have to be a good fit anymore. Is Mars a good fit for a professional football club? Probably not - but it's $ and $ makes the club go around.
