Looking for a people mover seeing that I'm to be a father soon for the 5th time - went to Hyundai at Essendon* fields and was impressed with the life size cut-out of Judd and I was seriously going to by a Hyunda Imax as a result. Missus gave me a clip behind the ear, so I am now settling for a Tarago.

Perhaps you should be out looking for a good deal on a TV

Dan Murphy has opened here. Are they still on board with us ? I hope so because I'm spending my hard earned in their establishment. [size=85]And to show my support for the Blues.

No, they're not....that Sponsorship was set up by Bruce Mathieson when no one else would touch us with a barge pole. If it's wine you're getting from Dan Murphy, then perhaps you'd consider buying anything from Jacob's Creek, under the umbrella of Pernod Ricard who are 'Level 4' sponsors at $250k a year.

Thanks Doc, Jacob's Creek/Pernod Ricard you say? I'll check it out...............Purely out of loyalty to the Blues, of course.

Probably time to update this, but like a lot of things at Carlton - there is some continuity with sponsors which means both parties are happy with what they're getting out of the respective deals. Can only be a good thing. I don't have anything on Visy's deal with Carlton. It did expire in December 2011 - but given the nature of Carlton's involvement with the Pratt family and Visy, and also the ongoing deal the company has with Chris Judd - one has to surmise that this deal has been extended for similar, if not the same monetary value.

The Optus renewal in September 2011 means they have been in the Carlton sponsorship mix for 20 years. As well as receiving branding on the club’s shorts, Optus leverages the sponsorship through a lot of business-to-business leveraging with the club’s coterie groups and other corporate functions. They also have naming rights to the club’s grand final lunch function.

Someone made mention on this site that 'Our sponsorship is full'. I don't necessarily subscribe to this notion. There's no better time to be canvasing sponsors than when you are well positioned on and off-field. There are creative ways to maximize sponsorship potential. Just because a logo isn't on the jumper or the building's HQ - doesn't mean potential sponsors shouldn't be given the red carpet treatment as well as current ones. Visy and Hyundai aren't going to be around forever.

In some people's eyes - I'd be going wayyyy down the wrong track with this next suggestion - but if you read the Financial Review like Chris Judd and I do, you'd know that Gazprom, the Russian Government owned (50.1%) energy giant, has recently opened an LNG marketing and trading desk in Singapore, and is seeking to build access to non-domestic sources; and are looking toward Austalia as a possible source of supply for its LNG trading operations.

Gazprom sponsors a number of teams across a range of sports in Russia and abroad, with Russian football champions Zenit Saint Petersburg among the beneficiaries. Their deal as sponsor of the German Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 pays up to €25 million a year. They've just extended that until 2017. When the company went into Serbia (for oil) in 2010, they decided to bail out financially ailing football club, Red Star. Up until then, Red Star couldn't buy a sponsor.

As a comparison, the Oil and gas exploration company, Woodside, has renewed its current three-year co-major sponsor deal with Fremantle for a further four years, taking the deal through to the end of 2016. It is worth $1.25 million per annum to the Dockers. Nice wad of cash. Is it a good fit for them? Maybe it is due to their location - but sponsorships don't necessarily have to be a good fit anymore. Is Mars a good fit for a professional football club? Probably not - but it's $ and $ makes the club go around.

Spot on Doc, there are more opportunities and better deals available, as evidenced by this tally:

We sit mid-table in terms of those who reported sponsorship earnings, and I'd imagine the WA teams would be doing nicely. A lot of room for improvement when you consider how many members we have and the attendance & TV figures we generate compared to clubs above us on that list (namely Richmond & Port).

The Richmond figure is however artificially inflated with a rather large sponsorship from Ingham's Chickens for in-kind provision of giblets and manure.

The club nor its supporters can't really use the 'because we came from such a long way back' argument because those deals with the likes of Dan Murphy's, Toshiba and Mayne don't exist anymore, and the existing Hyundai, Visy and Optus deals have been renewed at least once.

The negotiation skills might have to be honed - I'm really not sure. It's a difficult thing to get a multi-year million dollar deal no matter what the sport is - but the club now sits in the drivers seat thanks largely to its increased television exposure, which can be measured, and used as a bargaining chip. Put bluntly, if you weren't at least interested in hearing some numbers from Anthony Barham and Greg Swann, you'd have rocks in your head.

Continuing to go back to your supporter base and asking them to buy a $200 raffle ticket is not only bad practice, it devalues what they've already put into the club. No idea if they're doing that same sell this year - but if they are - they should think heavily about adding more sponsors to the books. Sponsorship is NEVER full.

My wife and I got separate phone calls not too long ago, so the answer is yes.

Working on the figures provided sponsorship is about 8 million a year which means marketing is about 4 million.
There is room for improvement particularly marketing as I am scratching my head trying to work out how Port Adelaide got 16 million.

Those Port figures must be wrong. Take off the 1 at the front of that figure and it'd still be a fair way off. I have a list of their sponsors and associated monetary amounts on my desk as I type this and it's not very healthy.

Interesting re: phone calls for raffles. Be interesting to know the figures. Must work otherwise they wouldn't continue to do it surely...would they? Difficult to get transparency on any figures...I guess this isn't a normal company/investor relationship.

Yeah, I was hugely surprised by those Port figures.

Everything I've read tells me they're on the bones of their arse, yet they're sitting near the top in sponsorship? Doesn't seem right, unless they're rolling other revenue streams into sponsorship (afl grants, etc. maybe they got a Scott handout?)

No way are those Port figures even remotely close. The latest major sponsor for them VIP is rumoured to be 2 mill over 3 years which is half of what Hyundai put in per year! (ironically 666 k per year Devils number  )

Their other sponsor from last season MyATM is broke and rumours abound they didn't fulfil the sponsorship agreement....

Spot on Doc.
Those Russian billion dollar businesses are run by ruthless bastards, but they have the potential to change the destiny of any team they get involved with.

They have $$$$$$$$$$$$ to literally burn

I honestly think you should push this idea through your contacts Doc.
I would love to get a coup over the Pies and Dawks

As crazy as it sounds, I sense the AFL would block sponsorship from a Russian Government owned energy giant in the same manner they conjured up adverse community reaction to The Daily Planet Ltd (Melbourne brothel) sponsoring the Fitzroy Football Club all those years ago. The lucrative (at the time) deal of course never went through and somewhat ironically - instead of profiting from the business of @#$%&!, without that sponsorship $, the club was well and truly [REDACTED].

I thought the Dees had a Russian IT company sponsor a little while back. Could be wrong though.
