Fair dinkum Verbs you amaze me.
His 2009 from was excellent. Your definition of excellence is wrong.
Russell improved a lot in the second half the season. His confidence came out and his running out of the back line was really helpful to the team.
however he will always be a B grader at best because he doesnt have a good footy brain. You either have or hadnt. He hasnt.
Nothing wrong with that mind you. He has found his place on the back flank and comes across as a "professional footballer" unlike some of the other !@#$%& we have on our list.
And there is nothing wrong in setting the record straight about Jordan rather than what you want which is to paint everything with a rose coloured brush.
Suggesting JR will 'never' have a footy brain is a bit tough.
Unlike Setanta, he was born with the game, accelerated as a teen and selected as a top 10 pick to reflect his footy ability as a teen.
His last 8 games were very good. He broke the shackles and backed himself to create play and make things happen. He was finally using his footy brain and ASAIC he lost that indecisiveness and lack of confidence which hampered his footy.
He has ability, and a lot of that.
He has a great physique: height, strength and pace.
Dual sided player by hand and foot.
He has newfound confidence in himself which is reflected by his B & F result.
You can't take that away from him, and you can't compare the JR in his formative years with the one who excelled in the last 8 rounds of 2009.
2009 was his break out year. We all have to agree on that. Now the test for him is to step up once gain with a consistent year starting from round 1.
With Judd suspended, and the high probability that Walker, Houla and Betts wont be considered for round 1, and the possibility of those training in the recovery groups at present don't come up, like Murphy, Austin, Waite, Hampson....it's blokes like Russell who I turn to to take on the bulk of the work in the middle because I believe and hope he can continue his 2009 late form. He didn't just play and star at the HBF. He did play forward and in the middle when he earned those B & F votes.
There's no need to pigeon hole him when he's still 22yo, and has improved his game.
Time to move on from the old and appreciate the new. We can only go by the form he showed in his last games. He has earned respect for the time being. Kids grow in many ways. JR certainly seems to have done so, and I hope he continues to blossom.
