Craig Davis left because he kept getting knocked out and Black eyes and I remember the DR's at Carlton tellinghim that it could leave permanenet damage if it continued.
Carlton wanted to avoid this but as a Professional Footballer Craig Davis found a mob who would play him and he played for the pies for a few years.
No one realised the permanent damage was that he would play in many losing GF's ala Ray Byrne against his former club!

Throw in Russel Ohlsen as well!!

McConville was very disappointing. Hamill was the big one. I remember the disbelief i felt when he walked. Not only was he a bit of a favourite to watch, it also astounded me he would actually go through with it.
Kennedy was very disappointing but happy to see the back of Fevola.

Hear, Hear, Blue Vein. McConville was very underrated even by the club it seemed. And Elliott and his arrogance didn't help with the Hamill situation.

But with Kennedy what could we do, lose on the Judd deal? Anyway, great trier that he is, has he really come good yet?

Agree with Fevola. Apart from the fact he is an absolute dill, we would never have won a premiership with him. Only one game plan up forward, kick it to Fev. It was the way he influenced the players around him. I reckon they were just scared. Good enough to get us into the finals but to win a flag, no way. It may take us awhile but we will be the better for it now he is gone.

Mind you, good luck to Fev at the Lions. He toiled without support for years and deserves on field success. Voss and Brown will be able to control him the way we could not. Good luck to his wife Alex controlling him off field.

Not trying to be a smartarse, but Craig was cleared to North Melb. Apparently not a success there, so they
cleared him to Colonwood.

I agree with all the above.

But for me in a nutshell and in order were:

Crosswell (how could he? Why? Got over it because I was young and Big Nick led us to more Cups)
Jezza (gutted, but sort of got over it)
Craig Davis (I could understand, but that didn't last when I saw him wearing the filth's jumper)
McConville (was one of my favourites and he continued to perform well at the Aints)
Hamill (hurt me the most since Jezza....traitor...put me off my 4th favourite team having grown up in Hampton, still not over it)
Camporeale (traitor)
Fevola (accept the trade, and whilst I wish he was a CFC player for life, at this stage of our Renaissance, it's for the better imo).

I can't believe no-one else has mentioned Robert Walls.

250+ game player, former captain, TOC member, kicked 10 in a game against Richmond, BOG in the 1972 GF, and pretty much still in his prime when he left (or at least not too much past it). It was shocking.

Jezza hurt because it was Jezza, but he was well and truly past his prime. Same could be said of McConville, Marcou, Sheldon, etc. That was just Carlton giving StK some charity.

The big ones were the guys who were champs and STILL PLAYING TOP FOOTY (Crosswell, Walls, Francis).

Re Hammil: I was the same as I think BV. I was sure he wouldn't go through with it. I had just returned from living OS for 8 years, and I was shocked that something like that was allowed to happen.

On the flip side it was an unimaginable feeling when Barassi arrived at Carlton in 1965 to captain-coach as a five time premiership player and with Whitten the most charismatic player in the League.
But also sad to see coach Ken Hands' demise as a part of that. Hands was an inspirational leader ever since the 1945 'bloodbath' GF with an onfield presence much like Big Nick.
Hands was Nicholls' coach through Nick's early years from 1958-1964 and no doubt played a part in Nicholls becoming for many of us our greatest player. In those days there was almost none of the staff assisting the coach that we have today.

For me Hamill was the killer. I'd had him pencilled in as captain, and I still maintain that when we lost him we effectively lost Lance as well (Lance for mine was never the same player without 'Sammy' doing the enforcing role next to him).

The other one I would mention is Simon Minton-Connell. We obviously badly needed the Diesel - but I thought SMC would be a gun, and his loss hurt me a fair bit.

Mick Martyn coming to Carlton.

My friend and I during the season were thinking of the oldest crustiest player Carlton could recruit and we always joked Mick Martyn. Then we got him and could not beleive it.

Our recruiting was so so bad back then.

Kevin Heath did ok, but you could throw Alex Ruscuklic and Renato Serafini into that list.

Agree with lots of the other players mentioned but i guess in a way we have been lucky over the last 30 to 40 years where players who have left really havent had glittering careers at other clubs.
The two glaring ones not fitting that criteria would be Crosswell and Walls.
Crosswell was just a superstar and Walls was very underrated too.
But with so many of the others mentioned, you could never pot them for leaving for "superannuation" at other clubs when they were nearing the end anyway. Players such as Sheldon, McConvile, Marcou, even Hamill.
Ha, funny how all those went to Linton Street, for clearly more than 7 cents in the dollar !

However, for me personally the ones that hurt were.......
Jezza, simply because he was an all time great.
Peter Francis as he was still young and very talented.
Cattoggio, because he was a cult hero.
Bosustow, went back waaaaay to early
John Trezise, i just liked hm but it never worked out at the Pies.
Fev, think the jury is out, revisit it in 2 to 3 years time.
Stephen Oliver, never know if he could have been the freak he showed glimpses of.
Sos, even as a assistant elsewhere i find totally galling

Murphy and Allan were beginning to become cancers on the club and I'm glad we got rid of them. Clearly didn't want to be at the club and were more than happy to put their hand out for big dollars for minimal return.

Murphy has gotten in a bit of trouble of late. Had beautiful skills like Houlihan but like Houla lacked intensity too often.

JK having to be moved on gutted me.
