...so why is everything Carlton does/doesn't do bad according to you? You identified in your post that you hadn't seen the game yet still went on a rant how the players weren't good enough and Murphy shouldn't be Captain!

It's probably time to acknowledge - at least for your own personal well-being - that a lot of things are actually going well at the club. On-field, the 'loss' could actually be a blessing in disguise. The playing group will be under no illusion about what is required come Round 1.

I didn't like what I saw Friday night, but at the end of the day it's NAB Cup / practice match. If the game wasn't called Nab cup Grand Final and was just a practice match, and instead we lost to Brisbane by 40 points in front of 500 people at Coolangatta Oval, it would barely rate a mention.

If the second quarter was representative of what we are going to deliver this year, then it will be fun times.

I'm tipping no one at Stkilda is overly fussed about losing to GWS at the weekend.

Nobody ever loses top GWS
Or the Suns....

Carlton defender Michael Jamison says the Blues were embarrassed by their performance in the losing NAB Cup final and have refused to use growing pains with the new game plan as an excuse.
While the pre-season competition, even the final, has been treated as a glorified practice match by teams through the years, there was no mistaking the disappointment and frustration in the Blues' dressing room at Etihad Stadium in the hours after a seven-goal loss to the Brisbane Lions on Friday night.
Club powerbrokers were agitated. So, too, were the players.

Sounds like the club is concerned.
And this from Gerard Whately:

Not much is real in the AFL pre-season comp, but on Friday night we saw Carlton's real problems.

I said before the game I'd take a 100 point loss as long as we win round 1.

Didn't expect to be so startled by our performance though.

Wish I could be more like some of you who don't appear to be all that concerned.

I bloody hope we come out and spank the Tiges however I must say I'm not all that confident now.

Just beat gws.
Destroyed a carefree Swans.
Played a great half against a carefree freo and an ok half against a freo that started to give a shit.
Got easily beaten by Crows but fought back towards the end.
Got smashed by Bris.

Hope it all clicks for round 1 but see the tigers winning reasonably easy.

No way!! How could they beat us!?! We won an elimination final against in Essendon* in 2011!!! There's no way another club could go past us...

We only finished 10th last year because of injuries......but we changed our coach anyway.....and surely our new coach can reprogram the players to a completely different game style in 4 x NAB Cup games...?

gonna be a long slow start to the season as the team adapt to micks style , we should come home well as the players learn and grow with the coach

we may well have dug ourselves too big a hole early though.

its not all going to click because in 2011 we played well and now we have a new super duper coach

players arent robots , especially ours, which seem a bit less smarter than the average bear

Last year we underperformed because of the coach.

This year we'll underperform because of the players.

Ok.

The above. That is why i typed it. It all ties in beautifully.

I don't think we are ready to go. Big marks required and the press has to be at its very best. Defensively, the mechanism that Malthouse is trying to drum into the players does not seem to be right just yet or is right but does not work anymore. Leaking some big scores. We need to get 'score against' down to 70 or less for Malthouse to be happy.

I guess Sanderson and Lyon are the exception to the rule that bottom eight clubs can't improve under a new coach.

The Crows won nine of their first 12 games under Sanderson's new game plan.

Fremantle seemed to take to Lyon's new game plan after a rough start that could be more in tune with how we'll go.

Or Carlton might be something in between.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm getting flashbacks to 1991 (and I don't mean NKOTB film clips)....

A favourite son - well regarded but considered out of his depth - is replaced by The Mastercoach. We have some gun players but we've lost our way. Injuries and bad recruiting said to be largely to blame. The club refuses to acknowledge that it's a "rebuild", but eventually concedes that a "major renovation" is required...

Patience may be needed.... http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=1991

Not a lot of real interest in that. But he's a terrific spokesman/public face for the club. Most polished media performer out of our players by a fair margin.
