Well Melbourne to pick 23 for Sylvia (end of first round), so we would have had to have got at least that.

IMO, yes - age is young (for a FA), contract length is long and good coin (4 years/2mill)

By comparison, Sylvia is older and was offered a smallar contract (3 years, doubtful that it would have averaged 500k/yr)

From the AFL website... (http://www.afl.com.au/afl-hq/the-afl-ex ... ree-agency)

A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.

The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:

1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.

Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.

Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:

• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round

In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

Yeah but for us that would've been pick 34 under this wonderful, completely logical compensation system.

Sylvia is actually Band 3, a 2nd round pick after Melbourne's 2nd round.

As a guide so far:

Band 1:

Franklin - 10 zillion over 9 years
Goddard - 2.9 mil over 4
Thomas - 2.5mil over 4

Band 3:

Chaplin and Pearce. Approx 400k for 4 years.
Sylvia: 1.2mil for 3 years.

Betts at 2mil for 4 sits somewhere in the middle so guess would be Band 2. Pick at the end of 1st round (#21).

You'd like to think McKay and Co are being very progressive and proactive in looking for trades and pick upgrades and aren't too conservative and scared to make a mistake.
McKay's always been one to have a crack so if it's up to him I'm expecting some player/pick movement this week.

So far our position is......

IN: Thomas

OUT: Betts, Hampson, Collins, Dale, Davies, Joseph, Laidler, Mitchell, McCarthy, O'Keeffe.

We have up to 8 picks in Draft - 13, 32, 33, 51, 69, 87, 105, 123.

I assume we will be upgrading Bell (as promised last year), Curnow (earnt it) and possibly Cachia (earnt it?). If so I guess that will take care of picks 87, 105 and 123. If so we will have 5 picks in National Draft and 1 in PSD unless we do other trades beforehand.

Many media reports state that this years draft is "shallow" with not a lot of talent after around 30. If this is the case I hope there are a couple of more trades next week but I also wonder who could possibly be in the mix.

The media reports only add to my confusion. One in the Herald Sun says that Mick is saying we will be done after the Docherty trade. Then Swan is reported to have said we are into some forwards.

Docherty for pick 32 (hampson)...
Saints offered Delaney 3 years, let's cut there lunch,
Let's go after Josh Bruce, offer pick 33, our second rounder...
Will give us another key defender..
196cm 94kg, great size and the boy can play...
Could look something like,
Simpson Jamison Bruce
Docherty Watson armfield (shut down role)
Tuohy Gibbs Thomas
Menzel Henderson yarran
Garlett Waite kreuzer
Warnock judd murphy
Anyone from; Carrazzo bell
Graham mcInnes Robinson
McLean Lucas White curnow
pick 13, Lennon (hopefully)
Adding Thomas, docherty and Bruce will add skill and depth...
Docherty, Bruce, menzel, graham and pick 13 will give us a good
Young mix of players, defenders, mids and forwards. Good youth also...
Next year we have to aim at a tall forward, maybe two..
In mick I trust...

I'd consider Bruce for Pick 32. The issue is getting him into our salary cap.

If we were to get someone like him I reckon it would be a player swap. Maybe Robinson?

Unless we can move a Bootsma, Casboult or Lucas and Scotland retires we are going to struggle.

As for a tall I believe Ben Griffiths has had a conversation with some Carlton people. Maybe pick 32 is being saved for him but the same issue arises?

Really like to see us get another 1 or 2 picks inside Top 20 though. There is some real top end talent there.

Yeah well, Kernahan played key forward pretty intelligently. Timmy Watson looked like a genius on the footy field too.

If I was us I would be trying to get it. Trade Kruezer or Gibbs. Both very good players but neither is Elite and are in their prime. No one should be off limits. Even a deal incorporating a few of Walker, Jamison, Warnock, Garlett, Bootsma or Yarran should be considered.

Agree...and we've tried...but contracted players don't want to move and/or there's little or no interest in our tradeable players because we haven't recruited or developed them properly. It's bad list management (blame McKay and Swann), bad recruiting (blame Hughes and Ratten) and bad development (blame Ratten and co).

blame president sticks and the board...
theyre all responsible to the board
the directors set the tone by providing direction.

Spot on..Blame Sticks and the board for appointing Ratten with no due diligence.
Blame Sticks and the board for poaching Swann, Malthouse Butffant et al because they are flowering dumb, lazy and completely inept administrators

Can you believe our list management crew seriously thought Jeremy Laidler would net us a second or early third round draft pick.

They also thought freo or west coast would hand over a second round for Bootsma.

The plan was to have 3 or 4 pics in the first two rounds. Plus Docherty and Savage.

Without those picks, we cannot trade for players as Mick wants most of list changes to come via the draft.

What pisses me of is we are shopping around players who can actually play football but want to play football at the Carlton football club.

Jeremy Laidler is no slouch. Other clubs know they'll get 100 games or so out of him. And can pick him up for nothing as delisted free agent or a late draft pick. Laids is probably the most loved player out or club amongst the boys. You can see why some are frustrated with how he was treated when they know and we know he can play football.

No wonder why some players have seriously considered offers from other clubs.

That is crap.
Other Clubs have paid overs for average players.
Who did you want us to chase ?
Would a soft outsider like Dal Santo make a difference to our midfield ?
Would you have swapped your best Ruckman for Savage like the Aints did ?
Would you offer a 2nd Rounder and a 3 year deal for an underperformer in Vince like the DeeTs did ?
Would you offer 2 years and decent coin to a 32 y o with dodgy hammies in Chapman like the Scum did ?
Would you offer a 2nd Round pick, and a 4 year deal on good coin to Stu Crameri like the Dogs did ?

People need to understand that we shouldn't just trade for trades sake. That's Crazy Vossy, or Crazy Neeldy type stuff!!!

Spot on

The only one of note would be Crameri in my book ... but we used the money for Dale Thomas and that's ok by me!
