It was crucial to get the cream of the crop the last couple of years and it would've been nice to get an extra freebie top 10 this year.
Let's just hope the young blokes we've got continue to develop & improve.

Cant this whole tanking/ anti tanking question be answered by Richmonds performance next season?
Most likely to get the number one pick, but could only win something like 2 games for the whole season and are so mentally scarred that they have almost forgotten how to win...
I would love to see how our 08 season pans out having won 8-9 games this year against Richmond's 2-3, and see then whose development was fast tracked- number 1 pick notwithstanding.

The glass is half empty then, eh?..

And do you suggest we keep losing games like Richmond just for draft picks.. Geez, whats wrong with some of you people you want improvement and development, we see our boys play with flair and confidence, Walkz, Waite, O'Hailpin finding new gears, playing an attacking brand of football with our forward line dominating...

Great for the supporters, sponsors, carlton members and image of the club, yet you still feel the need to view the glass as being half empty..

Take a look at the positives... 4 wins, 2 on the trot, young players developing all the time and only now are beginning to emerge and have that real self belief.. We have Dick Pratt as President, Greg Swann as CEO making big and productive changes to the club, Steven Icke as the best Football manager going around..

I could go on but the positives are plentiful! I know we have gotten carried away in the past as supporters, but quit with the pessimism and look at the bigger picture more realistically...

Our only glaring weakness is our backline which could get exposed by teams with better forward lines but the competition is real even now and i believe aside from maybe the top 4 teams West Coast, Geelong, Sydney and Hawthorn, we can COMPETE with ANY team on our given day, we have harder bodies, things can turn around very quickly in a football side.. And we are in with a shot against the Hawks this week too..

Look at the hawthorn team right now, if they continue along this rate, despite a young list, could make th top 4! By next year, we should have the talen to challenge for the 8! And lets not forget the continued development of our players who are getting older and battle hardened!

Give me a break AGRO! And i've not seen you once be positive, its rare that i've seen people like you and Synbad have anything good to say without a pessimistic response in regards to Carlton.

We are improving quicker and further developing faster than the media scribes and even supporters like myself thought they could.. We are the second highest scorers n the comp, and I believe we could have easily won another 3, just that the boys didn't have that self belief and confidence in their game that they have now shown against Port..

The competition is so even now, I believe we can COMPETE with any side 4th and below and at least give them a run for their money.. We have some weaknesses, but this style of game we're incorporating will pay dividends in the long run..

Just imagine the scoring power we have now and 3 more years development on all these players, how far we could go!??

Andrew Carrazzo typified the Carlton attitude on Saturday night, when he expressed that he believed it was a little disappointing we didnt go on with our lead in he last quarter'.. Now Thats a winning mentality to me, thats what we want at Carlton, not @#$%&! tanking and mediocre garbage, we now have the talent, and game plan which suits our strengths to play winning football..

Do NOT be surprised if we are Top 4 as early as 2009! I am not getting carried away, but its not out of the question with this talented, determined and match hardened group of players we have representing our side.. Don't know about you but with what we have to look forwrad to, in the words of the late Big Kev 'I'm Excited!' :)

hey we can tank next yera and the year after

or if not

then the after and the year after

or if not

..........................................

As Tom Stoppard once wrote

Eternity is a terrible thought, I mean when's it going to end?

but for us its

tanking is a terrible thought, I mean when are we allowed to win?

I was a pro tanker for a while but i am seeing that it doesn't have to be that way, well not anymore...

We have some pretty good talent now and our team is so young that the upside is huge.

Come to think of it the players are such a protected species, that it is easier to unearth a player now, than what it was not so long ago.....

We will be just fine.

No disrespect to you Firearms but i get the vibe that there are a heap of blues fans just like you who's attitudes have changed in the last few weeks because they can see how positive football can do so much for a club than 1 or 2 individuals.

No-one is saying our current list is perfect and deep (i think). Its more the point that our no 3 pick this year will be awesome in our team of inspired players with a winning attitude.

There's a club for you - they're called St.Kilda. Why don't you take your insightful posts over there - maybe you can start a tanking thread on saintsational.

That's the point I was making. And too coin a phrase from another very insightful poster "IF YOU READ THE THREAD CAREFULLY" I never started this thread.

Otherwise known as a circular reference ......

Face it, you are the most negative poster I've seen. You must have the trademark on the rolling eyes emoticon.

I'm RAPT we've won two in a row and you know what, we're going to win more games than we lose from here on in for the rest of the year. IF YOU READ THE THREAD CAREFULLY you'll see there are others who feel the same way.

The best point made in the last few posts of this thread, was that the team is bigger than an individual. A team full of talented youngsters and a handful of seasoned bodies playing good footy is the way forward, not ONE additional good player by losing to get him. And AGRO it's not just 2 wins in a row. It's 9 weeks of very good footy and 5-6 good games in a row. It's just now we've learnt how to win.

Agro, you mentioned that Carazzo was a gun prior to this year. He may have had the talent, but it wasn't being utilised and he was just another average performing player for us. This year with the competitive side and improving confidence around him, his use of the footy and vision has improved. I'm not so sure if he was playing for Richmond that you would have seen those improvements. Same goes for Fish. Without the supply that he's been given and the support of a strong forward line and an attacking midfield, there's no chance he would be progressing the way he is. That's what a competitive team does. A tanking team sends the middle tier players with talent down the drain.

for those that think we arent on the right path i direct you to a very important fact.

look at essendons top 5 players that are the cuase of them playing good football

look at carlton's top 5 players that are the cause of them played good football.

make no mistake every is talking about how good Essendon* are, yet they are 2 x 1 point winners, and we ourselves could consider ourselves unlucky against the likes of Lions & Roos.

Very little difference, however, where the winning is coming from is the indicative thing.

Walker, Waite, Simpson, Gibbs, Murphy, Carazzo, Thorton, Setanta etc.. etc.. is where our wins are coming from, all on the rise all going to get alot better

not Hird, Llyod, Lucas, Fletcher.

we need depth, no doubt in that, but our best 22 playing their best football can match anyside in the AFL IMO (and they are only going to get better and better as their bodies mature, skills get better)

what we have to learn as a side is to close the gap between what is out best and what is our worst.

Thats the difference between a good side and a premiership side and we will learn that over time with the kids we have as well as smart recruiting.

finish with less than four wins is not going to help us do that. the confidence gained by winning 8+ games will do more than an extra pick

I hope i dont get crucified for this but although i'm over the tanking, i'd rather us win 7-8 games and finish 13-14th rather than win 10-11 games and finish 9th!!! We do need a top 5 pick.

That's fine, but it needs a name.

What is something smaller than a tank?

i call it

que sera sera

When it was just a single win
I asked my club, what will they do
Will they be skillful, will they be quick
Here's what they said to me.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

Then It was a second win, I fell in love
I asked my team what lies ahead
Will we have goals and marks, day after day
Here's what they said to me

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

Then it was a third and forth
And the priority pick seemed to flee,
Will we play exiciting, will we be free
Here's what they said to me

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.
