Saw an interview with English football Legend Kevin Keegan, and he said something htat got me thinking...
He was talking about leadership, and the importance of leaders and senior figures around Clubs, and how important good solid Leadership is to success and to assisting youngsters coming through the ranks.
He said every Club needs that senior bloke who wouldn't be afraid to put a youngster into place, like give him a verbal or physical clip, and let him know the standards expected around the Club.
This got me thinking...... I cant imagine any of the so called 'Leaders' from around our Club over the past 10 or so years that would / would ve done this.
We used to have Leaders throughout the team back in the day... These days, you d struggle to find another player apart from maybe Juddy or Carrots, who'd let the youngers know what's expected at Carlton.
How sad we ve become....
Think of ryan O'Keefe and buddy.
Who do we have that would have told buddy to pull his head in?
Who do we have that would tell Judd Murphy and Gibbs to run defensively?
Nobody.
Precisely Mr S, that would require an honest and strong leadership group. Absent since 2004. The reason why Fev isn't still playing and on more career goals than Sticks and soapy valence...
Remember Morton, who crossed over from the tigers to the swans in 2012?
He spent most of the year in the reserves. I recall a swans player being interviewed on radio towards the end of the 2012 home and away season, I think it was Bolton or O'Keefe. They asked him about why Morton isn't in the senior team, seeing as he kicked 8 goals the week before, and about 6 goals before that.
He replied "we have made it clear to Morton that it's not just a matter of kicking goals, we know he can kick goals, he needs to get other aspects of his defensive game right"
What happened in the finals? Morton played his role, kicked those 2 crucial goals in the second quarter against the hawks in the GF, and even put pressure on in the last quarter that resulted in that goal to Keiren Jack. The most important goal in that final term that caused the hawks to shit themselves and Lose.
It was no fluke with Morton. The swans had put in the work and were honest and hard with him during the year.
We haven't done that at the blues since Brittain was coach with players like adam white (arguable whether that worked anyway).
Pagan tried to do it, but strangely chose Kouta to slaughter in front of the playing group and had to apologise to him a few days later....
In any case, these things just need to be sorted out by the playing group and leadership group, not the coaches.
