I think the big question is what is it at Carlton that is so ingrained in our culture that we are in in perpetual failure. We bring in blokes from successful organisations like Brian Cook who have overseen massively successful eras yet they don't seem to be able to change the Carlton culture.
Will Graeme Wright be any different? I just wish someone could come in and pinpoint it and fix it. I fear it never happens
When Eddie McGuire took over the Collingwood presidency the very first thing he said was "the mates rates days are over". One of the major reasons we are where we are at is the appointment of Stephen Silvagni as List Manager. Where did he have results prior ? Far too many failures with his selections at GWS.
Do any of you recall the Ian Collins challenge ticket for the board in 2002 ... Silvagni was on that ticket ... the members voted them in ... Silvagni didn't last one year. Do you really want him back ... I was astounded that we got him back. I have been elected on many committees and yes I too wanted to quit before my tenure, but YOU OWE IT TO THE PEOPLE THAT BACKED YOU.
I have this doubt that he can obtain and maintain the right people to want to work with him.
Nick Austin ... son of Curly ... would he have ever been in any AFL role if he wasn't the son of Rod Austin. I don't know ??? But what I do know is people like him get a massive head start in this industry compared to others and as a result their appointments can be flawed.
I can't really compare him to Silvagni as he hasn't had the vast amount of early picks that the latter had.
What I don't like about him is he doesn't value kicking as his major priority and until he runs with a policy of "can't kick we don't pick" then we are going nowhere. The Geelong teams of 2007, 2009 and 2011 were not quick but boy could they sure kick. Great kicking is the best disguise for a lack of pace.
And the other thing ... which we have little control over is LUCK. No other club comes close to our injury toll over the last 4 years. I have never seen anything like it and I am in my 60's.
