Agree 100%.

Duigs is not best 22. Maybe Lucas hbf for Scotto Rd 1. With Gibbs and Judd to come in, seems a decent chance.

Was on a plane when the game was on, so can anyone tell me if Bootsma got a run?

I also think it is quite encouraging that we had so many defenders who struggled yet we got so close. Zach, Hendo, Yazz, Jamo surely will all not play so poorly in the one game too often , let's hope they find a bit of touch next week. Hendo badly needs more footy coming into Rd 1.

Overall I thought last night had a lot of positives.

1. Lost by three points to a top 4 side from last year in tough conditions. Effectively beaten by Supergoals.
2. we played a very unbalanced side missing a number of key players
3. Fringe players in Garlett, Armfield, Lucas really pushed for a spot.

Observations:

1. Duigan, works hard but not up to it. However, I think MM will play him regardless.
2. Yarran, Murphy, Robbo weren't switch on, especially early.
3. Walker, take the good with the bad?? Will he ever reach his potential?
4. We have some real depth developing.
5. Henderson is struggling with lack of pre season. Personally, now he is injury free I would give him a 4-6 week training block like a pre season and bring him in ready around round 5-6. Vital player when up and going. Play Watson, White or McCarthy in meantime.
6. Three Ruckman do NOT and will NEVER work and Ruckman are NOT forwards. Play two max. and with Casboult & Rowe there is a real case to play just the one.
7. Simpson worries me. Never been the same assured player since being knocked out. Has struggled. Hope he gets it back soon. Star.
8. Curnow & AJ are back up players at best.
9. Scotland will be a bonus from Round 3.
10. No injuries always a bonus!
11. Carrots will be Captain.

Overall, I couldn't be happier where we sit at this time of year.

MM must love what he sees in Armfield.

The bloke puts every ounce of himself into every minute he's on the ground.
Couple that with the fact his disposal and decision making has improved outta sight..... the guy has become a major asset to the team.

Walker's mark made a SI website

http://extramustard.si.com/2013/03/08/f ... eways-cap/

The AFL made a rule that incidental hand contact to the back is allowed in a mark. The commentators acted as if the umpire overlooked contact because Walker took a hanger.

Agree with most posts that last nights game was encouraging.

Come round 1. I'd go:
Ins: judd, Gibbs, casboult, Watson, bell, Rowe
Outs: Scotland, warnock, dale, Curnow, white & one of duigan/Joseph depending tigers expected line up

He hasn't delivered us a premiership yet and who could we have nabbed with that first round pick? It all sounds like inverted sour grapes to me. It's a very ugly trait.

Either have Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Carrazzo or Menzel.

How is that relevant at all?

Its some kind of wierd proof that a drafted 17 yo would always have turned out better

Watched a bit at the pub last night

We will do better this year because we have a decent coach and coaching staff that have a direct clear message and therefore the team will play better.
That will make a big difference

However the notion that we are certanties for the 8 is bullshit
to me we have too many players who are average
Duigan Curnow Joseph etc

footballers whose skills are not up to it
not clean enough and make good decisions under pressure

It will be interesting who MM plays in the ruck

For me Hampson should be number one
Can kick a goal as well

I have always said that Kreuzer should play as a midfielder
a radical move but he has the tank is very good inclose. Has great hands
He simply cant play forward

Warnock simply know

Rowe and Casboult can pinch hit a bit

I cant believe that we only gave up pick 11 or 12 for him (cant remember which one) for him. What a steal.

But first, to the 3 ruckman: for 3 years we haven't had the 3 of them properly fit at the same time, so this was a perfect chance to properly trial it and I think we confirmed alot. Warnock only a tap ruckman; Kreuz not a forward but can rest there; Hampson the weakest ruckman but the best forward of the 3. I like that MM went with no proper forwards in the side to get a real good look at what would happen: few marks, no leading up the ground, not enough spillages for the little'uns to tidy up, little forward pressure. This all confirms what we suspected last year. And I'm glad he resisted the temptation to change things up later in the game as it gave the team more time to work out how to fix it on the ground ie Walker became more prominent.
So this was all part of the (pre-season) plan and if we won, we won. Pretty sure the preferred set up will be Kreuz as main ruck, Hammer in various roles plus Levi and Rowe as pretty permanent forwards. And it will work pretty well (better with Waite instead of one of Rowe/Levi). And Hammer was very impressive tonight.

Great summary. Kruezer and to a lesser extent Hammer have no forward presence and when the ball is there they get out bodied too easily. I cannot believe they have learnt nothing over summer. If they can get a clear run at it they are in with a chance but once body pressure is applied, useless or next to useless. They refuse to lead up towards the ball and create opportunities for our forward 50 entries. Very disappointing. Casboult has become very, very important to our team!

Pretty happy about last night. We had a few out, including our forwards, and had key players down in form.
Murphy had a quiet night, Jamo had a bad night as did Touhy.
If the scoring was the same as a normal game we would have won by 3 points.
No injuries.

Garlett and Walker lose us more games than they win.

Question is, are they prepared to do it?

Much prefer Walker in the midfield than up forward for the simple fact that he plays lazy so often. Flat out refuses to play in front of his man. Yes, looks great when he ends up on the highlight reel with a big grab, but more often than not gives up the ball.

Him and Garlett are both prone to ordinary decision making in terms of having a shot or looking for a better option. Neither finish well enough on the run for them to take as many speculative pings as they do.

Jeffy is fast approaching Raph Clarke status for how often he gets run down with no idea where his man is also.

Otherwise, rapt with Lucas' game, thought Hammer showed heaps, Laidler was handy. Would be happy for that to be the last I see of Curnow and Duigan in the seniors this year.

I agree with you 110% regarding the use of Hampson and Kreuzer, Keogh. I think Kreuz would be great playing as a midfielder. He'd be darn hard to man up on.

I reckon he's been pretty wasteful with the ball throughout the NAB Cup. Hope he regains his confidence shooting for goal soon. Like to see a little more poise when he wins the ground ball facing away from goal. He's been snapping at goal fairly wildly.

It's relevant because I know what you are getting at. All the negativity was due to how we obtained McLean. In other words, it's not clear cut. Regardless, you are not happy that he is performing well, you have to drag people down with it, it's spiteful and ugly.

Haven't seen the whole game yet, but reminded me a bit of Carlton over the last couple of years. Work hard to get the ball forward to a flooded forwardline, only to have the opposition eventually rebound out into their own very open forward line and score fairly easily. I was hoping we wouldn't see a lot of this tactical naivety anymore. I reckon the MC would be pretty disappointed at how easily we leaked goals.
