Just because we haven't been told doesn't mean there isn't a defined role with measurable KPIs.
Did Simpson kick your dog?

“It keeps me connected a bit to club land. But to be honest, I didn’t want it getting in the way of the media stuff, so a bit of a balance of the two,” Simpson said.

“Looking forward to it, it’s probably more about structure and process, rather than strategy and winning, to put it into context.

“It’s pretty low key. It might be a couple of times a month during the season. From my point of view if I was the coaching group and Michael, it’d be a bit heavier in pre-season while they set up stuff.

“I would’ve loved to compared notes with other coaches back in the day. I think it’s an opportunity for the club to get a bit of a different view on some of the things they do.”

It sounds like it’s less Robert Walls (mentor to the head coach) and more Neil Craig (overseeing the full coaching setup).

To be honest I don't really understand this Simpson role. Will he be at games, doing his analysis? If so, could see the media having a field day zooming in on him and then Voss if things aren't going well, like the constant (and hilarious) cuts to a glowering Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. If he's sitting on the couch and then catching up with Vossy for a quiet chat during the week, does he add any real value? How effective was Walls in (what i believe was) a similar role, does it just result in ego clashes and undermined authority? Will Simpson still be in a media role?

Simpson downplayed his new position, saying he will be at Ikon Park just twice a month simply to provide support for Voss and the football department.

“It’s a bit of a mentoring role with Vossy and the other coaches,” he said on SEN Mornings.

“This is instigated by him (Voss), he’s the one I’m working for.

“When I was coaching I would have loved someone one out, one back who was less connected with the day-to-day because when you’re in that day-to-day you get caught in this groupthink and you’re all on the treadmill really. You all end up thinking and talking the same.

“So having someone a little bit on the outer to talk to every now and then would have been good for me. I thought I could help in that sense with Vossy.

“He’s got a new coaching group and they’re all in different roles and he’s got some new staff as well. I’m more about process and structure rather than the strategy and winning piece.

“It’s pretty low level to be honest. It’s a bit more hands on in pre-season just to cast an eye on what they do and compare what we used to do at West Coast, what we did well and what we did poorly.

“In season it might be a couple of times a month just there for some of the younger coaches or Vossy depending on what he needs, just to give advice or a different look at whatever might be happening.

“It’s a consultancy role, a mentoring role for younger coaches, and I’m there for Michael.”
