Interesting to look back on....our Wizard Cup win in 2005 against the Eagles on Saturday March 12.

Carlton: 1.14.18 (111) d West Coast: 1.11.9 (84)

This is Jake Niall's report for the Age on the following Monday.

Wouldn't you know....I've just found a three page story

written by Caroline Wilson about the Carlton Football Club

from the end of 2003 to March 12 2005; the day of the Wizard Cup....I'll

put it up tomorrow.

I've been out of the country since late '03 and the '05 Wizza Cup GF is the only game I've had the chance to see live since then. The last one before that was the absolute flogging we copped from North in the last game of '03, although does it count if you leave in the 3rd quarter?

I am so deprived of footy that watching last years GF was rivetting (its the first one I've seen live since '03). Its like the Eddie Murphy joke in Raw where the fellas girlfriend won't screw him for 3 months. When she finally gives in he can't believe how good it is. Well of course it is. If a man doesn't eat for 3 months and you feed him a cracker, its going to be the best cracker he's ever had. God damn was that a Saltine (while licking his fingers and picking his teeth)? That ain't no saltine.

For all you fellas missing footy over the summer, spare a though for an expat who has missed it for 4 years.

Great thread too by the way. Keep it coming.

Thanks mate....appreciate that.

On the day of the 2005 Wizard Cup; Caroline Wilson wrote

this lengthy piece about Carlton for The Age...(We won BTW)

It covers the period from our last match of 2003...a belting

from the Kangaroos by 124 points....to this Wizard Cup Day on March 12-2005.

Without wanting to diminish Warby's fine work, is there a copyright issue with the articles being shown in full, even in scanned form? I would hate to see TC run afoul of Fairfax because of it.

Maybe it would be a better idea to link the URL listed at the bottom of the article/s and quote selected bits?

Only 11 players remain on our list from the 2005 Pre-Season Premiership Side as well - that 11 plus the inclusions on our list since that time augur well.

Oh KK.....the URL doesn't respond anymore.....the article is 3 years old; and not even archived.

Fairfax should be rapt in the free publicity.

Ah, OK. I thought places like Fairfax kept that sort of stuff available.

Good work on the articles, BTW.

On February 22 -2004; we played the Swans in a Wizard Cup game at Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

We had finished 15th the year before and the Swans had finished 3rd and reached a Preliminary Final against the eventual Premier Brisbane.

We were given no hope at all....yet took them apart; which gave we fans something to smile about.

Here are two match reports ...one from The Age's Rohan Connolly; and the other from The Australian's Jenny McAsey.

On a stinking hot day in Sydney, the 98% empty Telstra Stadium was the place to be to sink a "few" brews and watch Nick Stevens and Brendan Fevola give the Swans a football lesson...

There was almost a riot when people realised that Troy "Cream Puff" Luff was doing the boundary riding for Fox Footy instead of Tiffany Cherry.

I watched it in the Pineapple Hotel. Towards the end a mate of mine rocked up and I told him to watch out for the Blues. He said not to get too excited.

Turns out he was right.

I was there .. man, what a day

The best part was seeing the Filth supporter glaring at me because he'd gone to see us lose

'Twas a glorious day, indeed!!

On June 5-2004; we played Adelaide on their home turf AAMI Stadium in front of a huge Adelaide crowd of 41,617 people.....it was Round 11.

We were given no chance really after a first quarter of two shots at goal to their 11; but it turned out to be a thrilling contest in the end.....and famously remembered as the game when Fev kicked that incredible goal from the boundary a mile out on the flank.

Geez we struggled in the 1st half that day. Memorable win though.

On August 7-2004; we were in 12th place on the ladder, and Essendon*

were in 8th spot and desperate to win and cement a Finals berth.

So the stage was set for Essendon* to do just that; playing lowly Carlton at

the MCG in front of 45000 people.

One of the lasting memories for me of that game (apart from the win!)

was the terrific job Cory McGrath did in playing on James Hird that day.

Other good players were Jordan Bannister and Harford and Skinny Lappin.
