Im usually against being too top heavy in the forward line, but given our propensity to bomb it long, this actually has some credence. Plus, Young can’t really be any worse than whichever small forward he’s replacing

Maybe the answer is to call Charlie a small

Gutsy win.

Great win.

I thought we were gone at half time when we had all those injuries.

Superb effort.

Haynes and Jack brilliant.

Our small forwards are holding us back. Most don't have a great first touch.

Our talls were terrific.

Well I basically got the margin right.

That's about it.

Good win.

Some comments from my 5&7yo kids during the first half.

Carlton need to kick some goals.

Carlton need to kick some more goals.

Did he get six points, oh no he did bad and only got one.

Ooh Charlie has big muscles!

He actually kicked a nice crumbing goal so that's probably a fair call

That sounds like the Fox "special comments" team.

I haven’t exactly glowing in my appraisal of Acres this year but his courage to play through that shoulder needs to be acknowledged.

I haven't seen the game yet but I note many have said the game didn't reach any great highlights and we were poor.

Please watch this explanation about how and WHY we played like we did. Perhaps some might have a different take on the game, thereafter.

Will watch the video later, but I probably agree with it, based on your comments.

First half was decent footy, both teams attacking well off turnover. Second half, we had so many out or playing injured, our only hope was to take the pace out of the game and turn it into a brutal stoppage slog. And we did it masterfully. Think it was said the first half had 24 stoppages and the third quarter had 35 or thereabouts. NWM was tearing us to shreds in the first half but was ineffective in the second. Skills went out the window. Our conservation mode meant we even had some energy in the legs in the last 5 minutes, when we turned a bump clenching 3 point margin into a 15 point win, with the last 1:30 played in comfort.

Lots to be proud of, even if it was unwatchable. Now the best part: watching the rest of the weekend's games with the four points in the bag.

I can be pretty negative about Carlton at times but I was actually quite pleased to watch them slug it out last night.
We haven't handled pressure when other teams ramp it up. We did last night .

Let's hope that they can back it up next week against Swans and not put in another pathetic performance like they did against Crows.

What a slog . Great win for mine . We were the walking wounded yet still found a way . Credit to the Saints , they never stopped trying . Also credit to both coaches because they both chopped and changed there tactics during the night to suit the circumstances . I"m probably one of the few on this sight who have great respect for Ross Lyon . Great Coach for mine . And I reckon Voss matched Lyons great tactical mind last night . It was like watching cat and mouse all night from the Coaches box . Reckon Vossy came out a winner in the Coaches battle by a short half head and that's no mean fete against the master tactician Lyon .

Fantastic game. Fantastic win.

As mentioned earlier this year there's not one team style of play/game plan that is "guaranteed" a Flag after round 1.
This is still the case after 9 rounds too.

The best game plan is the game plan is the one that suits the list you have. Our list is pressure and contest, or what some like to term as "bash" and "crash", which all clubs must commit to in the game Aussie Rules. It just happens our midfield group is made for the contested game, and the players were drafted/ traded in to execute that style of game.

I also said prior to the season, that our list and game style reminds me of the Swans in 2004. You recall, that's the team Demetriou said was a disgrace and ugly to watch. Swans had the last laugh. They won the Flag and Demetriou had to eat his words. They played a hard tough, mauling style of bash and crash almost rugby style of footy. That's us to a T.

The beauty of that midfield group is we have a spine that is as good as any others:

Weitering
Silvagni
DeKoning
Cripps
McKay
Charlie

3 KPFs or 2 rucks, you can call it what you want, but we played the first half with 2 players over 200cm plus Charlie Curnow. what some desribe as "too tall"
Between them, they kicked 6 of our 8 first half goals. Then injury hit, and we had to swing Young into the backline after Gov was taken to hospital.

TDK had a great duel with the bigger bulkier Marshall and did not lower his colours. Was a great battle, and TDK gave us drive from the middle. Marshall played a great game too, but didnt give his mids an armchair ride.

Evans did a great job shutting down Wanganeen-Milera. I know W-M had 600m+ gained, but they were rushed, and Evans was on his tail despite being slower.

As dour as the performance was, with 5 players injured and 2 of them not taking the field after half time, we played the right way to win. To win!!!!

I can't help but believe that with the addition of Cottrell, Cincotta, Williams, Newman and possibly Boyd will improve our disposal efficiency and add speed to the team. Thos 4 or 5 to replace our bottom 4-5 players.

Great team game. We are on the right track. We are not an easy beat as some think. Season 2025 is alive.

We got a stupid one given our way in the first half for deliberate I thought.

But across the game they got heaps more of the 50-50. The HTB against White in our backline in the last qtr was a shocker I thought. There wasn't much White could do about that at all

Could argue that he never took possession & it was Philipou that dragged it in.

The umpiring was awful.
