With whose money?.

Less than $500 per drone/camera. They're everywhere over here.

Don't worry Tap, the Hawks won't be getting any more Tassie money post 2016.
North are about to cash in - even more.
But the damage has already been done with Hawthorn. They have been smart enough to seize on these opportunities. Loathe the club .... but have to respect what they have achieved.

What do you want to use a drone for?

We have recorded a loss due to funding foreign war related air strikes? This is quite the scandal.

Imagine if we had drones to carry out surveillance on Fev and keep him in check back in the day

Kenny Hunter, I would think that 95% of football people would agree with you. They respect what Hawthorn have achieved, but they do so without realising that without the AFL assistance of the Waverley Park gift, the Tasmanian gift and other such gifts given EXCLUSIVELY to Hawthorn that they wouldn't have achieved those last two flags. That money from those gifts gave them the resources to build the team that won the flags.

This is where there is a disconnect. The image vs the reality. If the AFL can shell out gifts like this when are they going to give a gift like this to Carlton? Don't hold your breath.

There is a reputation (still out there) that "Carlton bought their premierships" etc...yet Hawthorn has this squeaky clean image where they "won their flags the hard way against all odds etc." Perhaps in the 1960s and 1970s one could buy that "hard way" argument, but their most recent flags were not won "the hard way". Still, winners are grinners and 2014 is shaping up as another good year for Hawthorn.

They weren't gifted good recruiting and therein lies the secret to their success.

Great. Thanks for asking. Went kayaking this morning at 9,000ft. Saw the sun rise, caught 5 rainbow trout, drove a chevy truck home, gutted the fish, ate lunch, jumped on the trampoline with my daughter, drank some craft beer, watched some tv, wrote a piece on CRM, spoke to the neighbor about recipes for rattlesnakes, looked at some real estate and perused Netflix for tonight's viewing. Broke my personal best for consecutive days alive as well.

Sounds like you're living the American dream! What's the best way to eat rattlesnake? Going to buy any drones or go pros tomorrow?

Bloke up the road owns Velcro...and a herd of buffalo which he monitors with the drone and GoPro...I may wander up and give it a whirl. Rattlesnake is best cut into 4 inch pieces and deep fried...wrap in bacon and serve with coleslaw. I would probably pair it with a PBR.

They were however gifted the money needed to pay for an expanded recruiting department - ie extra recruiting staff to make sure they got the decisions right, extra scouts, extra player welfare spending etc..And this goes back to about 2006...years before Carlton even started spending big on "off-field expenditure".

with money one can make the right decisions.

Carlton, however, is still paying off its debt in 2014 - 8 years behind Hawthorn's expenditure expansion - and hasn't been given the opportunity to start making the right decisions...they are straight into equalisation mode before they have even got out of debt.

Yes, some of Carlton's errors are of their own making - eg poor choices in the draft, should they have stuck with the recruiting team for so long? but what came first the chicken or the egg? Would Carlton's recruiting have been better if they had the money upfront to pay for a better recruiting team/more scouts, more appraisals etc?
