It's probably because it's on a Sunday night

Agree. It's a bit like that. Playing Port on a Sunday instead of Richmond on a Thursday and a split round to start and an entirely different lead up makes it feel a bit different.

I'm sure once the ball is bounced come round one i will be exited as ever to see the real footy back.

We may all be heading for the exits early in this game.

The last time I had as much confidence in Carlton as to the results of a game was in the late 70s/early 80s

According to the Port website, Schulz has gone from a near certain starter for rd 1 to listed as 1-2 weeks and a chance to play.

Trengove & Carlile who haven't played at all yet are still 1-2 weeks away so you would think they wouldn't play rd 1 without any practice matches.

Who goes on Waite and Hendo/Levi and resting ruck? Do they have any other tall KPDs?

The exercise of putting our team on paper really highlights to me 1) how weak our KP stocks are; and 2) our lack of run.

We'll need an above average spell of good luck with injuries (not off to a great start in that regard) and in close games to make the finals. We'll also need at least a few of our lesser and/or younger names to have 'break out years'. Most importantly, we need ALL our players to embrace team pressure - every minute of every quarter.

Can anyone see all those things happening at Carlton in 2014?

I would love for a poster who is confident we'll make the 8 (and there are a number of you out there) to make a believer of me. I mean that sincerely. I WANT to believe it. Someone please convince me!!

Otherwise I think there's too many "ifs" and our list just doesn't look strong enough to me. I really hope I'm wrong, but I'm bracing myself for a fairly tough year...

Our side is full of mature men. An athlete is not endurance fit until they're 25 plus YO. We all agree the midfield will be the key again and our midfield is all in this range. Judd, Carrazzo, Murph, Army, Simmo, McLean, Thomas, Walker, Ellard, Gibbs, Warnock, Everitt, Kreuzer, Robbo, Garlett.

Those next in line as far as endurance are concerned are Yarran, Bell, Tuohy, Hendo and Menzel. There are not only strong bodies in that young group, but plenty of skill and speed as well.

Losing Betts will be the best thing that's happened to us. Gaining Thomas will be the 2nd best.

Oh goody it will be a good ole fashioned street gun fight then, the people won't be standing on the sidelines then, as they may well be in the line of fire.

Hmmm....that remains to be seen. I reckon we'll miss his tackling and forward pressure more than we think.

Aside from everything else, I look at our side and I do wonder where our goals are coming from. Who are the players we can count on to consistently kick multiple goals every week? Our midfielders are not big goal kickers. Waite is not reliable. Can Garlett or Yarran become 40 goals a year players? Walker will probably be needed across HB. I wouldn't be putting the house on Levi or Rowe. Hendo is one I can see kicking up to 50 if his body holds up and if left in the forward line with a decent structure around him, but he'll need to go back to defence at times. He's our best CHF and CHB. Unless we can clone him, I reckon we're a quality KP short....

I still believe Levi will develop into a great CHF. Its gunna be a big year for him as long as Dr Strangelove gives him a good run of games in a row (or instead of Rowe).

I'll be fairly excited about the season when ASADA Claus finally brings down the banhammer
