It worked then and will work now I'm guessing....don't think everything that was done a few years ago is crap and shouldn't be done today....in terms of development everything old is new again...unless we want to go down the chemical development path like the Dons.

the game has moved on since MM was at WEst Coast

Even Mick has changed in many areas

You don't give a Directorship position at such a critical time to a person who is clearly under qualified

Agree the game has changed.....but does that apply to the way we communicate or develop kids? I don't know and I'm guessing Wiley has a particular role...coaching input from the development of players point of view. I hardly think he's MM's director.
...my observation was that at the WCE there was a lot of "rested" players and young players brought in for no apparent reason (other than their development I'm guessing!!) . Ironically one such....the Super Sub - Callum Chambers...looked like a star at WCE in the limited time he played ....how did he go with us?

Why not get both? At least when channel 7 cuts to the coaches box things could be interesting for a change.

Would still like to see Cameron Ling in our coaches group, but we're very short handed so an extra two, perhaps three coaches depending on whether John Barker departs, should be looked at.

Malthouse doesn't need an experienced senior coach like Williams. He needs young coaches with fresh ideas. Wiley is a good, reliable, old head Malthouse can trust to oversee things and carry out his duties when he's not around, be involved with development. If Wiley is involved in strategy then that's a mistake.

I know I will accused of being bias but how can anyone critique a man in his job when

a) they have never met him
b) don't know what he does in his 60 hrs a week
c) don't know how, why or when MM uses his experience/expertise
d) he has been in the job just 5 months.
e) have no idea the positive or negative effect he has had on the players and or Coaches so far.

Thats only because he has coached so many games. Completely failed at the Bulldogs for 10 years. Had a great side at Collingwood and still only managed 1 premiership in 10 years. Overrated ... but still ... I hope he succeeds at the Blues. Go Micky Go. (A prelim at least or FAIL). Wiley would make a great senior coach ... very impressed with him.

1. Please get his name right.

2. I think you'll find Rob Wiley was more than just a runner!!

2 years as Perth coach
13 years as an assistant coach at West Coast
2 years coach of the WA State 16s side

More experience than Brett Ratten and Carlton had him as senior coach for 5 years. Enough said.

I can't help but think this is a big part of why malthouse also wanted him here..Will be very handy come draft time.

Are you saying Whilley should be made List manager rather than Director of Development and Coaching?

Who is Australia's best in terms of picking talent during draft time?

No just saying he has had an eye on a lot of the talent coming through having coached them and against them... Invaluable.

IF this was Rob Wiley's PD, or even a small part of it - I think he'd be across all of it quite well.

1. Develop Club’s Football & Coaching Strategy

a. Assist Head Coach in the development and implementation of the Club’s Football & Coaching Strategy.
b. Develop game plan and style of play consistent with Club’s Football Strategy.
c. Ensure game plan provides a framework for the recruitment and player development programs.

2. Overall Coaching of Players & Coaching Staff

- implement Game Plan effectively
a. Develop training sessions and presentations to the playing group.
b. Develop scorecard of key performance indicators of playing group’s progress.
c. Develop skill development strategies and tactics for a variety of situations and opponents.
d. Assist with management of the implementation of the Coaching program, including:
- match committee
- match day
- match review
- recruitment of players
- development of players
- retention of players.

3. Relationship Management

a. Positive working relationships with all players and coaching staff.
b. Positive working relationship with CEO, GMFO and President.
c. Positive working relationship with the Executive Management team of the club & Board.
d. Positive working relationship with the AFL and other industry stakeholders.

4. Develop a Culture of Success with Shared Values

a. Establish a professional & disciplined culture for players, coaches and staff which reflect the Club’s core values.
b. Provide strong leadership to the playing and coaching groups that encourages a supportive team environment consistent with the Club’s values.

If not, then...

I am not questioning whether Willey should be on our football staff - merely opening up the question of his role at the club to this forum

I have no problem with MM picking his team - and bringing in a close friend that he can confide in.

I do understand that MM would be a little weary of the ruthlessness that our club can display towards coaches, so a right hand man like Willey to bounce ideas off, is a sensible thing to do.

But Director of Development and Coaching??

He has never held such a high position in the AFL, and actually did a lot of running for many sides.

I am happy to have Willey on board - but perhaps as an assistant coach or development coach

Time will tell ............

You have no idea what his job entails, but you're not sure he's the right man for it. But you do think he should have a job. So... if they changed his job title to plain old 'development coach', you'd be happy?
